Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you or anything with the booze and drugs!

While it is pretty dominant on campus, you can also definitely avoid it as well…lol not everyone is high as a kite or wasted there…there is a good chunk of kids who aren’t into the whole party thing. There are always kids just chilling in dorms, watching movies, traveling into a bigger town to do something, etc… Big Parties just tend to be popular on the social scene (it is a state school after all).
the U is a sort of commuter school, because there are SO many instate kids there, most of them live at home because of lack of housing or reluctance to leave. And also, since I’m assuming you haven’t submitted a deposit anywhere yet, the U will give you a terrible dorm assignment now, since there is a significant housing shortage there, and its basically whatever is left over, which is nothin lol.

Trust me, the city life isn’t that great here. Many times, the concerts and events get canceled (especially in winter), the clubs and bars are pretty seedy, depending on where you go (they’re not all bad). And if you’re coming from Chicago (or the surrounding area), Minneapolis will seem BORING compared to it. Yes, it is cheaper, but living in a city will end up costing you more money than if you were in a smaller town like Madison. Plus, with more and more kids filling up the school, it is very likely your aid will go down over the years, maybe not significantly, but it will.
I will admit, it’s nice having the HQ’s in Minneapolis, there is no downer about that…

I’m sorry, I’ve noticed my posts are always so long…lol

from suburb of chicago,il …so OOS tuition for all…

for mechanical engineering i decided to go with UW Madison.
cost: 34k/yr (still waiting on financial aid)

compared to other schools i got into…(all admitted to college of engineering)

-UMinn-Twin Cities (20k/yr) [including 5k/yr financial aid)
-Boston U (35k/yr) [including the 9k/yr financial aid)
-Syracuse (35k/yr) [including 17k/yr financial aid)
-Purdue (37k/yr) [i dont think i got any from here)
-St. Louis Univ. (30k/yr) [i dont remember how much i got from here)

so do u think i made the right choice? considering financial aid and undergrad engineering program and social life and overall experience?

Out of your options I think you really made the right choice by deciding between UMN and UW (not only by price but academics included and overall school). By deciding between UMN and UW you couldn’t really go wrong either way. You seemed set more on going to the UW from the beginning and I’m sure you will be happy there (even though I tried to sway you towards the U haha).

Bottom line: Good choice! Good luck! You’ll have a great college life!

I still say that the UMinn is a better option for the cost. But you seem kind of set on going to UW for whatever reason, and I think it’s probably better that you go where you actually want to be. So I would recommend you choose UW-Madison.
