I’ve been looking to attend UW next fall and I honestly thought it wouldn’t be a big problem getting in but seeing some of the stats of those rejected is scaring me.
GPA: 3.839 (UW)
AP: 6
SAT: 1420 superscore
ECs: NHS officer, Key Club officer, 100+ hours of tutoring at the library, 100+ hours at a children’s hospital, 4 years in Orchestra
I’m a female Korean-American looking to pursue an education in the STEM field.
I am mostly worried because my essays are pretty weak. I know that some of my stats area a bit higher than the average but do you think that they will make up for my mediocre essays?
Most engineering freshmen are not admitted to their major. They used to get pre-engineering, which is being replaced by direct-to-college of engineering.
Ok. So for in-state your stats are good. Direct admits in the old system tended to have AP Calc, if that’s one of your APs that will help, too. Since direct to college is new this year, it’s really a matter of wait and see. Nobody’s going to be good at predicting. Nervousness after submitting your app is normal, though. Did you show your essays to a teacher or counselor? There’s really no reason to turn in something mediocre.
Yes, I did take AP Calc but received a B in the class and my AP test scores weren’t that great.
I received feedback from my brother, who is a really great writer, and my English tutor from my SAT academy. I actually rewrote most of my essays last minute because I had an epiphany which makes me feel a lot more confident.
To be honest, I’d be perfectly content with just getting into the school. Direct admit and honors or not.
It’s a couple days after the submission date, but I’d have to say that they’d be missing out if they didn’t take you! You seem to have some leadership positions and have pretty good grades. In terms of essays, I wouldn’t stress out too much since UW takes about 60% of in-state students and there are plenty applying who (frankly) will have done less than you in high school. (Also, hi from another in-state female Korean-American applying to UW!)
