UW vs. Penn state

I have researched quite a bit, and yet I am having real hard time deciding between two. I actually eliminated UIUC in the process due to its higher tuition. But UW and Penn state has similar price range.

I would love to hear what you guys would have to say on this.

I would also really appreciate any advice or suggestion on this..

thank you very much.

btw, I am a prospective business major who would like to go to med school , assuming i will be taking pre req for med school.

I'd go with Wisconsin without a doubt.

sorry, it's University of WAshington, seattle

Seattle has better access to the airport and other city amenities.

ok, umm anybody else?.. are u guys not responding b/c u guys think these are not as good as of colleges than ivy leagues? or is CC really slow these days?

well thanx to you who have contributed.

Where are you from? What are you looking for in a school? Penn State has crazy sports fans and THON (the largest student-run philanthropy in the world). I don't think you will find those things at UW. But if THON and crazy sports fans aren't your ideal of fun there are over 650 different clubs to choose from. Have you visited both schools? Do you feel like you belong at one of those schools? I personally would choose Penn State.

Good Luck with your decision.

UW - there is a lot more to do in Seattle than in UP, PA.
If you are an international student I think you will find more diversity at UW as well.
Good luck!

thank you ashlieh and PA Mom

I am an international student.

I 've been to UW, i didn't like the rain, but I know i will get used to it at the end.

Becuase cost of college years are gonna be similar ( at least I am assuming) I am just tryinig to decide based on quarter system versus semester system.

I know in order to get into med school or any MBA program, I need the GPA and the test score.

I would love to hear what you guys think of these two systems.

P.S I didn't get a chance to visit Penn State.

Does Tax really matter in your college cost? like sales tax for clothing, food, and hmm any other.? In OR, we don't have sales tax here, so I have been pretty lucky with that.

Anyway. Quarter system versus Semester? ( for business , well i wanna switch to engineering too, but mainly for now. I am interested in business)

UDub has excellent biological science programs, a #6 ranked medical school and a thriving biotech industry.

For business, the two schools are about the same.

GoBlue is exactly right. I don't think the semester vs qtrs is a big deal except that you get out later on qtrs and some internships want you sooner.

^ And quarters don't have a month-long winter break around the holidays like you do with semesters.

I prefer semesters...it's more forgiving if you have to miss a class and allows more time to absorb the material.

thanx again.

do you anything about the current state of frats in UW right now? I heard that they have been cracked down a lot and and there are a lot of dangerous stuff going on. ( i heard when i visited. )

not a big deal, since it's gonna be a huge school , where i am gonna be able to find some parties around.

but just curious. thanx

If you are looking for parties, I would go to Penn State.

If you have never visited Penn State I would suggest you do some internet browsing at the area - google earth or such. It is very different than Seattle.

While many students and families absolutely love Penn State, I would choose UW in a heartbeat.(particularly for an international student) The ease of transportation, the city, and the weather are very different. While you may not like the rain in Seattle, Penn State can be pretty cold and windy a good part of the year.

I have been to both campuses and I found UW to be quite beautiful.
Good luck - sounds like a tough choice for you!

I have been living in Oregon, (Medford) for 5 years w/o my parents.

I kinda want to try east coast which would be similar to Seoul, Korea except for the size of the town, but I stil am very indecisive.

Approximately 40,000 people live in State College, the town surrounding Penn State. Penn State itself has approximatley 40,000 students.

It sounds like you really want to give Penn State a try. I can relate to wanting to live in a different part of the country for college - both of my daughter's left the state for that reason.

If you are concerned about sales tax you should know that the tax rate in PA is 6%, but clothing and most food items (groceries- not restaurants LOL ) are not taxed. Not as great as Oregon, but not too bad.

Do check out the transportation issue though - I am not really sure how easy it is to get around without a car. Maybe post that question on the Penn State board just so you have an idea. I know Seattle is easy to navigate.

Good luck again!
FYI- My daughter will be in Oregon this fall.

It sounds like you want to go to Penn State. Good Luck. I'll also be a freshman at Penn State this fall.
