UWC Applicants for the 2013 school year!

@David1116 I can’t say, nor could anyone except maybe the reviewer. Sure, there are characteristics that a typical UWC student would probably have, and an average grade, but theres so many other factors! I’m from the US and my Norwegian friend is applying (from the US) and I have no clue if being Norwegian will help her (because she is more cultured) or hurt her (because she may not be able to represent the US as well). Her parents are divorced, and she has a speech impediment. Both of which could have an effect on her application in either a positive or negative way. Often times they need a certain number of people that complete this criteria or that one, and sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw or a check in the box. Also, It most likely isn’t one person that reviews these apps. I’m assuming when I say this, but they probably send a handfull of apps to a bunch of different people around the country and they can each pick one or two. So ultimately, it could come down to who’s in your group. If you’re grouped with some bad apps, then you’re lucky, but it could go the other way too. I guess what I’m trying to say is, it’s possible, don’t give up hope, and you never know what’s going to help or hurt you. Just be yourself and hopefully that will be enough. Good luck!

@knoxandonyx yup! :)

I am sending in all of my test scores as hard copies and I am having trouble uploading them to the site. Is anyone else having this same problem? Also, can we upload more than one score report on there? I am currently using 3 different tests for it. Thank you!

@lindzmm: Thanks!

@Ashbry8: I’m not having trouble uploading to the site, but I’m in the same boat as you as to not knowing whether we can send in more than one score. I feel like several scores would help represent me better.

Any thoughts on that guys? One test or more than one?

@knoxandonyx I ended up emailing UWC just a few minutes ago to ask. I had my guidance counselor upload them and send them in for me just in case. My friends who are current UWC students encouraged me to send in more than one, that way there is more of an idea of you as a student. Also, at UWC test scores are taken in account, BUT they are most definitely not the most important thing. They are looking more for a particular type of person who is self motivated and enthusiastic rather than grade motivated. So I may not have answered your question at all…but hey, I tried! Good luck on your application!

@Ashbry8: No, you did answer my question, thanks! I totally get that they are looking for a certain type of person, not a test score; I didn’t mean to imply that they were!!! I just meant that more than one score might provide them with an idea of “Oh, in X test, the score for this [insert subject] was a little lower, but in Y test, the score for [same subject] was better, so obviously they aren’t stupid, they were just having a bad day in test X” or something to that effect. (Hopefully that makes sense. There are a lot of things that only make sense in this crazy mind of mine! :slight_smile: ) Anyways, if you could also post the general idea of the response from the UWC that would be great! Much good luck to you on your own application!!!

@Ashbry8 @knoxandonyx

Thanks for the blurb on test scores- definitely makes me feel so much better! Is anyone as stressed as I am right now? Finals are next week for us, plus all of my extracurriculars are coming in on big deadlines, and worrying about the application! I feel like I’m going full energy 24-7 haha.

Oh my gosh, @mirvinvitela! Please don’t feel alone! I am sooooo stressed right now and this forum is my outlet! I have some finals coming up too! (Does your school run on a block schedule too? Like with Semester classes that cover a year of material because each day has a doubly long class???) Anyways, I am going full speed without stop and I just know that as soon as everything cools down, I will crash super hard! I am right there with you!!!

@mirvinvitela I completely understand what you are going through. I am a sophomore this year and I am taking AP Chemistry, AP Government, and AP European History as well as high level math two years ahead of me. I’m also taking 10 classes in 8 class slots on my schedule, so I am stressed out just like you! My drivers test is Thursday and it has taken a back seat to this as well as another application for another school like UWC. Ha! But I believe they have an extensive application to mirror what the IB is like. I know the Chinese national committee has their applicants attend a boot camp for the IB and UWC for a week instead of an interview process. So in my eyes, we have it easy! :P

@knoxandonyx I will post as soon as I get an email back.

Ok I need your guy’s opinion. I’m supposed to be taking chemistry next semester, but my schedule got messed up and so I can’t add it until later this month. Consequently, it shows I have a less rigorous schedule (art instead or science) and no science class. There’s no place on the application to explain this, but I’m thinking of writing a letter to the school to have them put that with my application. I just don’t know how much that will matter… Any advice? Thanks

@knoxandonyx I have the same schedule. We call it the 4X4 because we take 4 classes frist semester, then 4 completely new classes second semester. I love it because I can double up in sign language and math.

@konxandonyx

I’m so glad that other people are feeling the same way! I’m so stressed out, and everyone seems so qualified (more so than I do), and it’s nice to know that we’re all pretty similar in some ways. And no, I’m not on block scheduling, but parts of my school are…it’s kind of weird. In AP Spanish, though, we’ve done a semester and half of work so far this year, and are currently performing a full length Medieval play in Spanish, so it feels like much more than a regular class haha.

And @Ashbry8, good luck on your driver’s test! I took mine last year, and I was definitely a nervous wreck. I’m sure you’ll do amazing! Oh, and the I’m thanking my lucky stars that we don’t have to do the bootcamp. Phew!

@lindzmm I would send in the schedule as it is. Showing that you were interested in art shows that you’re well rounded and have different interests, and honestly, I doubt one class would be the deciding factor overall.

@lindzmm from what I have heard, don’t worry about sending a letter or anything. If you do get an interview, explain it during the one on one session. If your guidance counselor has not sent off you recommendation yet, you may have them put a little blurb in there about that. Once again, don’t worry too much over that. They are looking for who you are as a person and academics is only one part of that. Keep that in mind! Best of luck to you on your application!

On your preferences, what did everyone put and why? I’m curious to see where everyone wants to go!

@lindzmm i agree with mirvinvitela about the art class. there are a few (art) classes that I took last year that I now would have much rather replaced witha social study or something, but they really rounded out my high school experience. I think schedule changes and dropped/switched classes are pretty common, they shouldn’t think of you worse for it.

@ashbry8 I wrote up my preferences in a post a few pages ago, with a bit of explanation, but here’s the ranking (more or less. it’s constantly in flux.):
AC-RCN-Ad-UWCM-UWCUSA-Pearson-LPC-UWCCR-MUWCI-UWCiM-WKUWC-UWCSEA

Also, for those who haven’t submitted yet - who has uploaded their headshot? I still haven’t taken it…I keep putting it off and I don’t want to use any of the photos I already have on my computer because they’re not very recent. It is one of the two things I have left, the other being prompt number 3…I finally edited and put in my complete essays on the application.

Number 3. Eerg. I can’t decide how to tackle it!

@Ashbry8 Mine are Atlantic, Costa Rica, Mostar, Adriatic, and Mahindra. What’re yours?

And @lunascreatures…I used my most recent facebook profile picture, which is coincidentally the picture I used when I took the SAT and ACT. You’re right, it should be recent though, so they can match a face to your application! And if you need help with number three, feel free to e-mail me a copy to look at, and I can send you mine if you’d like as well.

@mirvinvitela I have no preference. It would be an honor to even get an interview for me.

@lunascreatures Keep in mind that at UWC they believe mountains can be moved a pebble at time. So think small. Also, keep in mind what has to happen for cultures and nations and people to be brought together. Education isn’t always academic. If you need to you can email me yours and I will look over it and I can send you a copy of mine for ideas if need be. We are all in this together!

Does anyone have any more information on the IB in general?

Oh and I forgot. According to interviews, does anyone know anything about them or have any advice they are willing to share?
