Both are great schools, and obviously W&M has the edge in terms of academics. I want to major in gov, but how much of an advantage would being in the tech honors program be? Do you think there is any way I could convince W&M to offer me honors because I got into tech honors?

My opinion, WM any ciriculum, is better than Tech honors. Government, especially.

Unless you’re doing engineering, W&M is way better than anything Tech can offer, even with honors. And I doubt W&M would give you Monroe just because you got in honors at Tech. Monroe is just not comparable. I think you can still apply for the Sharpe Community Scholars program though (I may be wrong about that though).

The only reason one should ever choose VT>WM would be for engineering. If you want prestige, quality, and a personal, elite college, choose WM.

Whoa etre…What about Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Urban Planning, the Agricultural sciences: forestry, fish and wildlife sciences, soil sciences, and horticulture, the animal sciences?

If a kid wants those areas of study, VT would be a better choice in my opinion; all are highly respected and highly ranked nationally. If a kid wants to do undergrad research, VT offers the largest natural resources research program among Virginia universities. I love WM as much as anyone on this forum, but I have to give Tech its due. VT isn’t just about its engineers! :)

Yeah, I have a friend who’s going there for Forestry, and I was like whoh, you know exactly what you want to do already! And Blacksburg is a great location for that too!

But the OP specifically mentioned government…

And my reply was to etre’s post…(see first two words) I agreed that the OP would find WM a better fit for his desire to study government when he asked about it on the VT forum.

Regular honors at VT isn’t worth selecting it above William and Mary, especially given your interests. If you got into honors housing, the call is much closer. My D had to choose between VT honors housing and W&M, no special honors, two years ago. W&M won out because of its size, location, and academic environment, but her best HS friend is in honors housing at VT and loves it (although had a harder time adjusting freshman year).

W&M has a much stronger government program, IMO.

If you want, you can apply for a Monroe scholarship at W&M after your freshman year.

W&M will not give you a Monroe because you got honors at Tech… the student bodies (as a whole) are not in the same league.

I am not saying VT is a bad school, they certainly have good programs… engineering being by far the best known/acknowledged, though the subjects you mentioned are fairly good of course too. Rankings, however, while they don’t tell you about the personality of a school, do tell you that whatever you want to achieve will be made more possible, supported more by resources, and less limited. In that way, WM is most certainly the dominant school. And if you want honors, you can always apply for it in your coming years there.
