Vacation

I have a question about what percentage of people stay on campus during FallBreak/ Thanksgiving / Winter break, etc. Do the campus dorms even stay open during all of these breaks? I live pretty far away from campus, so flying home for every vacation would get pretty expensive.

Don't know about numbers, but it's not covered by the meal plan so you'll have to spend extra for it. The dorms stay open, and I suspect there are people doing thesis research and stuff; your prox works until they turn it off end of May.

Have you looked at air fare from La Guardia? It's generally a lot cheaper than Newark, and the airport isn't that much more of a hassle to get to.

What do international students do?

I get to fly back to Canada every break, but I can't think of anything other than stay on campus for off-the-continent internationals.

Party at my house over breaks!

the dorms are open for the whole year, however the campus clears out a lot during breaks. The meal plans dont work during fall break, intersession, or spring break- so you have to either buy one ($$$$$), eat at frist (you can use points) or on nassau street. The meal plan does include thanksgiving though.

A lot of people either go home, or go home with roommates or friends who live closer. Also, a lot of clubs and or classes will have trips over the break- ie orchestra went to portugal during intersession next year, the a capella groups are always touring somewhere etc.

More people stick around for spring break (it seemed to me), because the weather is nicer and its getting towards the end of the year. There are definately people around during the shorter breaks, but i'd say that very very few people stay on campus over christmas break.

The dorms most definitely stay open. More people stay as juniors and seniors than as freshmen and sophomores. (Seniors especially stay Spring Break to get thesis work in.) The breaks can get lonely for freshmen who stay, because there is a real possibility that you might not yet know anyone left on campus when people take off for fall break. After freshman year, you'll almost definitely know at least a couple people to hang out with who are staying. So if you're wondering when of all times to invest in going home, do it freshman year.

I've always gone home fall break, so I'm not sure what percentage goes. It's certainly much quieter than usual, but on the whole not a depressing break to stay in the dorm. You'll probably find others who are staying on campus.

Thanksgiving is almost too short for anyone who would need to fly home to do so. It's really just a long weekend, since you might not get out of class until 4:30 on the Wednesday before. Those who can drive, or find extraordinarily cheap airline tickets, are more likely to go home. Those who stay can often find someone to share the holiday with, be it other students' families, professors, family friends in the area, etc. I went to see an old friend in northern NJ for the first two years, then last year was invited to Thanksgiving dinner, along with a handful of other students, at a prof's house.

During Winter Break, the entire place REALLY clears out. I'd chosen not to leave until Sunday morning my freshman year, and regretted it when everyone disappeared on Friday... it was SO depressing for some reason!

Intersession seems to be the time for your ski trip, road trip, trips to NYC, visit a friend elsewhere sort of thing. Since they just spent three weeks with their parents over the winter break three weeks ago, most don't go right back home. Plenty stay, and do something interesting for a change. Intersession is roughly a week long, depending on when your last final is scheduled.

Spring Break's a lot like fall break, with the seniors-in-carrels caveat.

If you want to do something fun, stay after spring finals for Reunions, with a student organization (performing group, band, dining services, etc.) that can give you housing. It's a lot of fun if you've time to do it at the beginning of the summer.

Does anyone know what dates winter break starts and ends? or a site where i can check all the breaks?

er... mucho gracias, amigo!

how long is winter vacation?

It's roughly three weeks. A long time!
