Valedictorians

thisyearsgirl, 250 is small??
we have fifty and we rank (well, the top 2 know)

primeminister: My high school as a whole has 250 students, but my grade only has 50. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

We don't rank, but the school is aware of the top two around May of senior year.

Our grade has roughly 250 people. Class rank is determined at the beginning of senior year.. meaning that you really have to bulk up on AP classes Junior Year if you want to have any chance of being in the top ten.

Our valedictorian status is given after senior year first semester grades, and it's determined by class rank (grades are weighted)...if you want to be in the top ten that means that you should've taken high school accelerated courses and done well in them in middle school, because it's also counted into your GPA..

Ranks are done at the beginning of senior year. Then they rerank after first semester. It's finally over though! Cruising time :)

Entirely GPA-based from grades 9 through S1 of senior year. Pretty coveted, too, with over 700 people per grade in a very competitive school.

Our valedictorian is chosen by the grad committee and a teacher/admin panel. Applications for grad committee went in last week... you can be on one of three committees: "Banquet and Dance", "PR", and "Speeches". The last one gets to decided who is valedictorian, historian, speakers at the banquet, etc. You can't make any speeches if you're on that committee, and you don't have to be on the grad committee to apply (but it helps). Looking at the past valedictorians from my school, they are usually IB students who are also very involved in the school (clubs, sports, music, leadership, etc). Speech, debate, and model UN all help because they want to make sure you can give a good speech (in front of 650 grads, their parents, and the teachers). I think that this is a good way of choosing, because the valedictorian will be somebody who is really deserving of the title.

Do any of you know if you're going to be val?? It's CC so... haha.
I'm applying, so we'll see.

I'll be a val :) never was a question since S2 of freshman year, though the two guys behind me haven't taken honors courses (no APs here :() for crap and we don't weight

My school determined valedictorian and salutatorian status at the end of our senior year. The valedictorian was mad because even though he got in ED, he couldn't slack off second semester because I was right on his heels. We didn't find out until graduation practice. :D

The top 5 people at the end of 1st semester senior year had to write speeches because technically we didn't know which two of us would give speeches. I thought it was pretty crappy because they made people write speeches that probably wouldn't have a chance to give them.
