When is the Valedictorian status given out in your school? I'm just wondering :).

My school doesn't rank because it doesn't have enough students (250 kids). I don't think we have a valedictorian either... at least they've never mentioned it to us before.

Our school determines final class ranks after the 1st semester...so it's a done deal right now.Kind of strange if someone blows the last semester.

our val is student elected...how annoying/weird is that...it usually turns out to be the most POPULAR person rather than the most deserving one.....meh

^^wow, sucks for a shy kid who can work hard. some people are also not so gregarious around non-familiar people, or sometimes they can't buy the best clothes, or maybe they're not the hottest and so don't become the most popular. bad system imo.

Anyway near the end of the 1st semester for applications, and then near the end of the year for the Graduation ceremony. So it doesn't matter if you're not in the top 10, but if you are then you better not SLACK off or you'll lose you're precious ranking

our school doesn't rank because they say it is too competitive. We are a top 25 high school according to Newsweek in their top 1000 high schools ranking. Our class president gives a speech but no "valedictorian"

Very interesting...what different ways of selecting the valedictorians!

Our valedictorian is selected after the final exams in June.... guess they don't want any slacking off.

They should just pick out of a hat.

Our 'valdectiorian' is chosen shortly after junior year so that they lead that year's graduating class. We don't have a real val.

this is exactly what i'm trying to figure out right now lol. hopefully it's after first semester instead of after the school year ends.

sometime during the last 9 weeks of senior year they pretty much know that top three won't change unless something goes drastically wrong...

Ours is after the first semester, so it's only based on seven semesters.

Picking a valedictorian by grades is an unhealthy factor at school. Kids place the title too highly-most students at schools don't understand that its not the 4.0 GPA, Valedictorian status that gets you into college, its creativity, diligence, and capability that colleges discover through essays.

A valedictorian is never selected at our school until the graduation ceremony, based on weighted GPA ending 8th semester. All other ranks are kept secret to everyone but the student who inquires of their own.

Yes I agree that there is a misunderstanding between balance of APs, courses, and ECs at schools and also the selection and commitment to ECs and the whole private versus public school (colleges) emphasis on which sections, morality justice.

I can't believe some of the students who worry about 1 single B and participate in all 10 clubs or whatever of my school, committing an exceptional 2 hour thing per month. It boggles my mind... especially when they are gunning for schools that in my opinion, would be easy safeties for them.

However I find myself digressing into a ran about student-counselor communication and communication between the understanding of high schools towards college admissions and the actual wants of specific colleges...

Ranks 1-4 in my school all want Ivies, #5 wants Duquesne, #6 OSU, #7 Harvard, #8 and #9 Duke, and #10 I don't know. #2 may end up at Case Western Reserve because she hates traveling anywhere.

Val is kind of important at some colleges..Ohio State and Purdue are 2 I know of that give extra automatic money to Valedictorians and Salutatorians.

wow, that's very cool, studious mom!

jots down "Purdue"

Thanks for the info.
