my D was announced as VAL today, should she let Princeton know or is it to late.

It's too late to notify them; decisions come out next Thursday. Congrats to your D, though!

He's probably right, but I'd go ahead and notify anyway. If it turns out there is a waitlist or something (who knows?) then it could help bump her higher on the list.

Even though she was "announced" today, it was probably noted on her midyear, no?

They ask for class rank from the guidance counselor--and if she's the Valedictorian, she would be ranked first, right? Sending them something would only tell them what they already know. I think I'll be the Valedictorian of my high school (they haven't "officially" announced it yet...but I was ranked 1st a couple months ago and have gotten the max GPA, so there's no way I couldn't be), but I won't let Princeton know.

At my school, Valedictorian isn't named until third quarter, which is after mid-years are sent out. Mid year reports only go until the 2nd quarter of senior year, while my school calculates the 3rd quarter into the final ranking. So if this is the case, you may want to notify them. Its certainly not going to hurt.

Yeah, it probably won't help your daughter but it definitely couldn't/wouldn't/won't hurt her. So I would say drop a call on Monday or maybe even send an email tomorrow, I suppose, unless you need to fax them some kind of "official document."

fax them as soon as possible! congrats to your D

too late for your daughter. and it does not make a difference in the least if she was ranked #1 on the mid year report. It is assumed she is Valedictorian. decisions have already been made.

and if you do send anything, please dont call the award "Validictorian"

Maybe her school doesn't rank until val/sal are named. Anyone think of that?

True, but they'll still ask for a good idea of ranking (e.g., top 5%, top 10%), and so it shouldn't make much difference. In any case, the decision has been made, and unless she's waitlisted, it isn't worth sending it in. I'd wait until after the decision is made.

At some schools people "share" ranks, which I don't understand at all. My friend's school usually has about 25-30 "valedictorians" because anybody who has a 4.0 UW automatically becomes one. At my school, there is really no possible way to tie at all.

My school doesn't announce that at all. They just tell if you are Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Cum Laude, which is like 3.9 and up, 3.75 and up, and like 3.5 and up. They have a picture in the paper when they have they talk about graduation and you get some stars on the graduation program.

Yeah we don't have the Summa Magna Cum Laude or whatever you are talking about. The bad thing is that our class ranks are currently kinda flipping every other week (within the top 5 spots). The girl who is first is very antisocial and kind of dull and pessimistic towards life in general and her speech at graduation will probably not be very good. The guy who is second is awesome and charismatic and hilarious, but the guy who is third is just incredibly awkward and makes very unfunny jokes.

So everyone's praying that 3rd stays 3rd so that the guy who is 2nd can give a good speech.

What a weird thing to be even thinking about. I'm dumb.

Where are you in your ranking? I'm first, but in a class of 20 (though we do have some good students--still, it's not nearly as impressive as if I was in a class of 500).

I'm 14th of 468.
If I had chosen to do band instead of playing a varsity sport, I would be ~5 or 6, because band kids get honors credit and varsity athletes do not.

BOGUS.

I'm 15 of 259, but thats after this semester. I was 19th before and that might be the only rank that many of my colleges have (including Princeton) because the secretary at our councilor's office screwed me over by not sending my midyear reports for 3 weeks because he lost the list of schools.

And our rank sucks because it isn't weighted at all. So I took all the hard AP classes last year and most of the seniors did not, so my few A-'s in those classes drop me a whole bunch.

At my school, it's not just based on your academic performance but an overall "award". I thought this was common practice, but guess I'm wrong.

At graduation, I get to sit on stage because I'm the "smartest Hispanic person" in my grade. There's also a "smartest African-American person."

Surprise, surprise, there is no "smartest Asian" person.
Which bothers me.
I would sit on the stage anyway, though, because I'm student-body VP, so I don't think anybody is going to even notice. Still, though. Pretty condescending.

Wow, that's ridiculous. Only teachers and board members sit on the podium/stage thing at my school
