Hey everyone,
I'm currently a junior who took the SAT in December for the first time. I got:
CR: 730
Math: 770
Writing: 800

I was really surprised by my writing section score, since I'd never really done that well on it in the past, as well as my critical reading score, which is usually my best area. I've heard lots of people say that the writing section doesn't matter very much. Does anyone know how much schools would value it, if at all? Also, I'm debating whether or not to take it again next year as a senior. Would people recommend/not recommend taking it again? I think my CR score could increase a lot, but writing and math could go down. Right now my top choice is Harvard.

Also, the breakdown for the writing section was a 10 on the essay and a perfect multiple choice section, again, this was a huge surprise.

Well, for Harvard, you should retake it. the 800 in Math is reachable (I’m guessing you only missed 1 on your 770?). CR can go up to 750+, with more practice.

The 800 in W looks good, but I don’t think it’s that important. If you think the 800 can’t be reached in your next test, Harvard, I think, does use superscore, so you’d be okay.

Yeah, I omitted one on the math section, thanks for the advice. I’ve gotten mixed views from a lot of different people on this so it’s nice to have some clarification. Comparatively, how much would you say the writing section matches up to CR and math?

Since your top choice is Harvard, your scores are within the range of the middle 50% of Harvard applicants. You can increase your chances by retaking it to get a higher school or focus on other things: EC, community service, class rigor, etc.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will take it again. I’m taking four APs at the moment, I took two sophomore year, and my non-AP class (precal/cal) was actually my worst winter term grade so I don’t think rigor will be a problem. I don’t really have any community service credentials beyond one club which does community service as sort of an afterthought, but plan to do something this summer volunteering for an inner city squash program. I’m also hoping to play squash in college, and I have a few other ECs (chief editor of the paper, captain of a weaker cross country team, some other societies and clubs) and am playing up my interest in classics. I’m not sure I’ll have the skills to be able to play for a school like Harvard though, their team is very good.

Hey I’m just like you haha, similar SAT scores, ECs, etc. :)

I’m retaking it, good luck!

Cool, so you play squash too? Where do you play? Good luck on your retake too by the way.
