Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App: 8/10. Idk, it was well written, but I wasn’t a huge fan of it. It was almost too deep haha. I wrote about my cultural identity, and how I want to build bridges (metaphorically, of course - I ain’t no engineer :D).
Supplement: 8-9/10 Hm, I just reread it. It’s an extracurricular essay, so I did a first person narration-style essay of my thoughts through brief moments in mock trial tournaments from my freshman year to my senior year, and then ended with a paragraph about how I love advocacy (that last paragraph ended up being an essay for like 10 other schools haha). I didn’t actually say anything about Vanderbilt in it, but I guess that was okay.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Counselor: 7/10 just because I have no idea
English teacher: 9/10 she told me it was very very strong
History teacher: at least 7-8/10, but I’m not really sure
Additional rec: 7-8/10 Mock trial coach
Interview: Didn’t request one (I’m so lazy, please help)
Applied for Financial Aid?: Well, I hit yes on common app, but then never turned anything other than FAFSA in, so…
Intended Major: Poli Sci and Public Policy Studies
State (if domestic applicant): PA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: South Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >200k (I’m not getting any need based fin aid)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc): None
Reflection: My dad did his residency at Vanderbilt, and he loved it… I think that’s why I applied. Even though I was born in Nashville, I only ever lived there for like 6 months, so I don’t really have a connection to it (or Vandy). I applied on a whim, but I’m kind of glad I did. I don’t know if I’ll end up attending Vanderbilt, but I’m happy I have the option to be a student at such an amazing school.
Strengths: SAT, rank/GPA (although rank and GPA at my school are hella shady haha), course load rigor
Weaknesses: Common App Essay? I’m not really sure. Subject tests could have been better. Lol is being Asian a weakness?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Not really sure! I think I seemed kinda unique through my essays (or I hope so…), and my scores/gpa were solid.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: Temple, Rutgers, NJIT, Swarthmore
Deferred: Yale
Rejected: None yet, but Ivy Day still hasn’t arrived
[/list]**General Comments: **
Honestly, just DO THINGS in high school. I know that sounds like terrible advice, but I think everyone here would rather watch tv all day than go get involved in extracurricular activities. The real struggle (at least for me) is getting off your butt and doing things. Once you take those first steps, it’s really not so bad.
Excited by and thankful for this offer of admission! Good luck to all of you who are still waiting on admissions! To those who were waitlisted - don’t lose heart
