Wow SaucyFruits
that’s crazy
hope she has some other great options
agree - none of this process makes any sense

@HokieCrazy well if you look at the Common Data set (2018-19) which is the latest one available - the numbers go like this: number of waitlisted students admitted: 243. The last time I checked 243/1602 (number enrolled) was 15% - and last year - my understanding (2019-2020) is that it was higher. So it is not 9% for sure!

I’m sure your math is correct, but I was just quoting Vanderbilt’s own FAQ page, which was linked from the waitlist decision:

lol waitlisted at every private so far

1560/3.98 Asian Male
Strong Leadership/Debate & Soccer EC’s
Strong essays imo but who knows

@saucyfruits, wouldn’t you love to be a fly on the wall when they make these decisions. I was thinking D’s issue might have been a lack of subject tests but apparently that’s not the case either! I’m sure your D will land in a great place, but it’s hard to understand the criteria sometimes.

@TrendaLeigh I don’t think you can conclude that. Every school is trying to build a community. I don’t know that she necessarily went ‘wrong’ anywhere. If she worked hard, did the best she could, and engaged in the activities that she wanted to, not just build a college resume, she will end up where she is supposed to and will be better off for it.

Does anyone have any idea what the acceptance rate off the waitlist is? (I’ve only seen stuff about the percentage of the incoming class that is from the waitlist)

Vandy was my top choice :frowning:

Per Vanderbilt’s FAQ Waitlist page:

rejected LOL

It’s a roll of the dice at a school with such slim acceptance rates. I’m sure all of the applicants had amazing stats, so it’s hard to judge what they want at their school. My son was waitlisted at VT, which was a head-scratcher based on his stats, but also waitlisted at WashU and Vanderbilt, which was likely a stretch for him. So, who knows. The key is picking from the schools you get accepted to and being happy with that decision…and then don’t look back.

Rejected
asian female, no hooks, OOS
best in category for statewide research competition
~10 regional awards/3 national awards (All in top 3 in my region/semifinalist)
published in peer-review journal (first author)
2 year research internships
applied for same major as my research experience
~5 year customer service job
~3 year volunteering (hospitality related)
OOS
strong leadership in 1 club
strong recs
weak stats ig… around 3.76 (~A GPA)/ 32 ACT composite

Well, shoot, my son got in but there is no way we can afford it. I am not sure how they come up with expected family contribution but this is the second private school he’s into that thinks we can pay over 70K a year, but we cannot. Looks like it might be a state school for my boy. It’s a shame because he LOVED it there on his tour, it really felt like the ‘right’ place.

Reading through this and seeing that some rejected people had much better stats than I did, I am proud of being waitlisted, especially as an asian dude. I’ve been waitlisted 3 times in the last 2 days =(

Waitlisted
34 ACT
3.98 uw gpa, 4.7 wgpa

Son waitlisted. Engineering
ACT. 35
Math 2. 800
Physics 800
3.82 UW GPA
Magnet public high school.

Been rejected from each of my super far reach dream schools, but honestly that’s just how admissions are nowadays. Crossing my fingers for a masters or transfer lol.

Rejected. I actually thought this was the best interview out of all, but ig that doesn’t really play a role after all…
