Vanderbilt Class of 2024 RD Discussion

Reminder that admissions counselors also make decisions based on personal character:)

I hope you are very happy wherever you end up!

Rejected

1550 SAT, 770 Math II, 790 Bio E, 3.94 UW, no W.

Excellent ECs, (though I did reuse my supplement and it was really last minute).

At the very minimum, past May 1, usually most waitlist->acceptance happen after the official commit date.

anyone else feel like a lot of people got in this year? I feel like it was higher than a 6.3% acceptance rate which was last years.

Daughter waitlisted:

35 ACT
1530 SAT (790 Math/740 ERW)
800/740/730 (Math II, Chem, Bio SATII)
7 AP’s - 5 5’s, 2 4’s
National Merit Finalist
4.4 W/4.0 UW, rank 1/580
Genetics internship at local Children’s Hospital
Great letters of rec
Strong EC’s

Accepted: Miami (Ohio), UNC Chapel Hill
Deferred: Yale, UMich
Rejected: Northwestern
Waitlisted: Vanderbilt
Waiting: Yale, Duke, UPenn

Question: Which is better, Deferred or Waitlisted?

Your daughter’s stats are similar to my:

ACT 35
SAT Subject Math II 800, Bio M 790
GPA UW 3.95, W 4.5
Rejection - None
Accepted - Georgetown, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD (Regents for UCs), WashU
Waitlisted - Vandy, Swarthmore
Waiting - Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, UC Berkeley

Good luck with tomorrow!

Rejected again! (sighs)
SAT: 1500
GPA - 93.53 on a 100-point scale.
Many ECs…

Deferred means that you applied early, and they are postponing making a final decision on your application until regular decision. As far as waitlist goes, you only hear back if space becomes available in the class and is the result after all final decisions have been made. Hope that helps!

DD Rejected she was not surprised, didn’t have a 1500 which is needed to get looked at further. All good though so long as UMich comes through!!

Accepted!!
SAT 1580
GPA UW 4.0
NMF & Nat. Hispanic Recognition Scholar
Good ECs, pretty good essays
Acceptance is bittersweet tho; fin aid was by far the worst out of every other school I was accepted to so I won’t be able to attend

Do not feel down. College admissions are very unpredictable. A student may have been accepted to Northwestern or rejected from Vanderbilt. A student who may have been rejected from both may be accepted to more prestigious institutions.

Though I do not know you, I can assure the fact you worked diligently and your efforts will show in more prestigious institutions you may have applied to.

@redwag thanks for telling me!

Waitlisted!
Applied to the College of Arts and Science as an English major
OOS (Alabama), white female
34 ACT (composite and super-scored)
4.0 unweighted GPA, 4.436 weighted
9 APs total, with 5s on the four exams I’ve already taken
U.S. Senate Youth Program Delegate, scholar’s bowl captain with some state-level individual awards, National Merit Commended Scholar, Spanish Honor Society President, and involved in singing for four years
I also had a few other regional/state/local awards and leadership positions. My essays were probably okay, same with my letters of rec.

I was probably weakened by my low ACT math score (28!). Plus, I didn’t have a hook/spike.

I’m happy though! Getting waitlisted is so much better than just being rejected. Now I just have to wait and see if I get off the list!

Rejected
1570 SAT super
35 ACT
4.46 WGPA
Good ECs and essays I thought…
RIP me

Waitlisted - Mechanical Engineering

My common app was about the Sims, which I have played since I was five, and that taught me how to read. It was good for my standards, but writing is not my strength.
My supplement was about the club I started and how I dealt with some of the struggles during the process.

Vandy is the first private school I was accepted to, which showed in their great financial aid package. Very happy!

Really good common app essay and ECs, meh supplement, really good and decent Rec letters mix

Sunbaby That’s why you didn’t get in. Are you really going to say that to someone who got in? Not to mention you probably loaded your common app essay with brags, as you did in your recent post. AOs can read that easily
