Vanderbilt Hall

I'm in Berkeley college. What's Vanderbilt Hall like for first year? I've heard people say it's the best freshman residence hall, and I've heard others say it's among the worse. Current students: what are do you think?

I’m not a current student, but Vanderbilt has traditionally been somewhere in the middle. It’s definitely not the worst housing on Old Campus (that honor goes to L-Dub), but it’s also not among the best (I’d say those are probably Welch, Lawrance, and Farnam). Vanderbilt is on the far end of the Old Campus and therefore a somewhat longer walk to Commons, classes, etc… but of course you’ll be right in the middle of campus from sophomore year on!

Don’t worry! I’m sure that you’ll love Berkeley and Vanderbilt. Honestly, all residential colleges at Yale are great. Congratulations!

Hey…does Vanderbilt Hall have any singles? I really need to know this!!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/932545-best-freshman-dorms.html

Oh, yeah, I forgot Durfee. It’s also among the nicer freshman dorms, along with Farnam, Lawrance, and Welch.

megavortex: housing in VBilt is in suites mostly. They will have adjoining single and double bedrooms. If you must have a single, you’d better have a compelling reason to tell your Master. Otherwise, it’s the luck of the draw.

If it’s for planning purposes (furnishings, etc.), don’t worry. You’ll get your assignments in plenty of time.

Eh…I’ll just wait and hope. How many of these suits have single bedrooms? When do we hear who our roommates are?

MV: are you really nervous about living with others? Why the urgency for a single and the anxiety about learning who you’ll be rooming with?

Part of being at a place like Yale is to learn & live communally. Most people I knew loved living there and being in the suite system. It leads to lots of close close friends.

Nah, it has nothing to do with nerves/other people. I’ve spent weeks during the summer living with others. I really want a single dorm, but for another reason.

And the roommate question was just out of curiosity.

Almost no freshmen in Vandy get singles – there are a handful of suites on the fifth floor that occasionally go to freshmen (instead of annexed juniors, who are their usual occupants) and those have singles. Other than those rooms, they’re all doubles, and sadly, those doubles are pretty small.

Don’t worry, having a roommate is a character-building experience. Also, all rooms in Vandy are suites, which means you’ll have a common room – the good news is, then, that the CR is used for almost all socializing, and bedrooms are just for sleeping/studying, which alleviates a ton of common roommate problems.

Gross man.

^hahahahaha

don’t get carried away. not what you’re thinking :P

For some reason I really thought MegaVortex was a girl.

I’m sure whatever your issues are, your roommate will be able to cope. I can’t imagine anything (eating disorder, peeing their bed, secret pet komodo dragon) that would keep me from liking my roommate if they were a nice person.

@djdopeslap

I don’t know, a pet komodo dragon would really freak me out.

The fifth floor hasn’t gone to freshmen in recent memory. The basement has though, and the basement suites have several singles (one double, the rest are singles). Also, sometimes a few of the smaller suites in F (on the right side of the entry… ending in 2 and 3 i believe) will be given as triples instead of quads (i.e., with one single and one double instead of two doubles).

Vandy is, in my opinion, the most beautiful freshman housing. There is very nice wood paneling on floors 1-4, window seats with storage/large windows, and mosaic tiling in the entryways. The exterior of the building is also rather opulent. The courtyard is lovely, especially in the spring, and it’s a convenient social space (and soooo convenient for move in. You will be grateful for this when you see how easy move in is). The bedrooms are smallish and inconveniently long rectangles (basement suites have much better bedrooms, and D has the largest bedrooms after that). The common rooms are rather large. Maybe 5-10 people out of 100 will get singles, depending on how many basement suites you get.

Don’t worry about vandy… it’s wonderful. You’ll miss it when it’s gone (although BK has much better housing).

There was at least one 5th floor freshman suite in the class of 2012.

Hugh had a snake. (At least I think it was his snake but there was definitely a snake because I saw people holding it.) It disappeared as snakes do and then came out of the couch during a party. That was in Vanderbilt. I think the snake is probably gone by now. But keep an eye out.

^^ In Berkeley? I’ve heard of Branford doing this, but not Berkeley. The way our junior housing works, usually the septets and octets on the fifth floor are taken by annexed juniors.
