I'm a typical sport- loving, straight, white, middle- class male from New Jersey. I've heard people say that Vassar has a very large number of gays and is very gay friendly. Is there a substantial amount of straight males like me there too? Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against gay people and have a good amount gay friends, but I still worry about being overwhelmed by a very large number of gay people. Will I find people just like me as well? Thanks a lot.

Yes, AFAIK only about 25% of us Vassar guys are gay.

As a parent visiting, the place feels very normal. My straight son feels very much in the mainstream, as do the gay kids – it just doesn’t seem to be a big deal.

Laura’s dad, Are you visit Vassar right now? We plan to be there this Sunday. Is there any do’s and don’t that you can recommend? I expect the offices will be closed.

Iglooo, I sent you a private message. . .

This Sunday will be a little dead as there are mid-terms next week which is the last week before break but…

The Vassar calendar has a number of items on it

[Master Calendar](<a href=“Master Calendar Error”>Master Calendar Error)

The FDR and Vanderbilt houses to the North of the city are open on Sunday if you have time to drive around. The weather is supposed to be great and the leaves have started to turn a bit. There is a fair on campus in the afternoon but I don’t know if it is open to the public. I suspect you can probably wander around.

I am sure if you introduce yourselves to some of the students you will find one who will show you around. You should find someway to indicate to admissions that you were there as it is always good to let them know you are interested. There may be a box outside that building with a self-guided tour or interest card. Not sure.

Vassar has plenty of straight male students. The reputation for being overly populated by gay male students is not true.

the gay population is big enough that you notice that there are plenty of gay students. i have no problem with that. but if you are, you really shouldn’t worry, i feel that there are even more straight guys around (bros, non-bros, other people…sorry, i lack better words). i think a better way to put is that vassar is no different from any other college, but it’s definitely a place where straight and gay people can roam about without making it a big deal.
