So I noticed that this year, compared to 2010, and 2011, the times for Spring exams finishing and the times that Winter Recess begins are really pretty different. I'm sure this is the case with many universities, but any particular reason? For instance, one year the last date of scheduled exams is May 15th, which seems like a fair date to head home. Then other years the calendar shows the exams going until the 21st-23rd.

Not that I mind, haha, it's just a curious question. Are most exams the week right after classes end and those longer dates are just for particulars?

Plus I noticed if I'm attending in the fall, we go back for just one week after T-giving and then it's finals preparation. Again, how soon can I expect to head home, does it depend on what classes I'm taking?

If I remember the calendar correctly, classes end on a Friday and exams begin the following Wednesday evening and extend until the following Friday.

You won’t know when you can leave until the final exam schedule is posted. The majority of my friends who needed to fly home usually booked their ticket for the Saturday following the last day of finals. If they had the money and their schedule allowed them to leave earlier, they changed their flight.

yeah it’s not so bad to book for the day after finals end/dorms close…if you get done with finals early you can just party…

i dont know if this is true for all students but i find that ENGR has their finals and prelims before anyone else…

My understanding is that the academic calendar for the spring term is largely set around when memorial day weekend will fall. Commencement will always be that Sunday, and then you back out your year from there.

Oh? Interesting, well that’s reasonable and makes sense as to why it changes like it does. I don’t have flying problems since I’m from eastern New York, so it’s basically just a question as to when can I jet out for the 3-hour ride home, ha. So I guess it’ll just be different each year depending on my classes. Thanks, guys!
