Vent on Skipping Over Prereqs

Do you think it's okay to skip over prereq's for AP Classes? Like for AP Biology should you be allowed to skip Biology and go to Ap Biology?

For example in my school the guidance people are letting people take AP Chemistry without any Chemistry first. I just think that is so annoying. Our normal science procedure goes like Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and finally Physics or AP Science. I took Biology over the summer to get into Chemsitry so then I could be ahead, but now they are letting people just skip over that. It is just so annoying!!! All my hard work has been for nothing? AHHHHHHH

So anyway to "get back at them" I'm going to ask if I could take AP physics without taking Physics before. So hah!!!! They probably won't let me do that, but still I can try.

Also what does anyone think about going from English 10 Honors to Ap English Lang Junior Year? My school supposedly doesn't allow it but I'm going to ask if I can do that? Do most schools let you do that? Thanks.

I don't see anything wrong with taking an AP class in something you haven't covered before. This might be most difficult with the sciences, but it's done all the time. Almost noone takes Physics before AP Physics.

It is fine to skip the prereq, I would only be able to take 1 Ap science, instead of 3. Is would be impossible to have aps if you needed to take 4 different science courses and you dont have the $ to pay for summer courses.

I agree with the other two posts. And it's perfectly fine-even recommended-that people go from English 10 Honors to AP English Language Junior Year. At my school (and all of the others I've heard about) AP English Language is usually specifically for juniors. And if you follow that logic, does anyone take AP English Lit at your school? I would definitely hate to go to your school- how are you supposed to take any challenging classes?!!!

Any other replies. I mainly mean the part about letting people skip Chem while I had to take it. Uhh I'm saying that that's unfair.

My school has a similar system.

Plan 1:

CP Science 9 (Earth Science/Physics), CP Biology, CP or AP Chemistry depending on previous grade in CP Biology, AP Science class

Plan 2:

CP Science 9, CP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Science class

Plan 3:

CP Chemistry, AP Biology or AP Chemistry, AP Chemistry or AP Biology, AP science class

It's funny how things works at different schools. I thinks it's ok to take an AP class such as AP Chemistry without taking a CP Chemistry class before, although I would highly reccomend taking it. As long as you try hard, I think anyone should be able to take an AP class. I am sorry for the problems you are facing and I too agree, that is unfair.

My school has two plans.

1st Plan (For Students That Are Serious About Their Education or Good in Science)
Biology->Chemistry->Physics, or AP Biology, or AP Chemistry

2nd Plan (For Students That Are Not Good In Science)
Physical Science->Biology->Other Science

I hope I can take AP Chem as a sophomore but people keep telling me that it's really hard if you haven't already taken honors chem. Hopefully, they do a bunch of review at the beginning of the year, or I'll be left behind.

Taking AP Chem without taking Chem first is not necessarily an advantage. AP Chem covers a lot of material and it can be intensely stressful as a first-year chemistry course. I think you'll come out ahead in terms of your ability to earn a 5 without cramming in a bunch of material that you won't remember five minutes after the exam.

In my school, you have to take the pre-requisites for the AP courses, but we actually learn everything starting from scratch again. So if you want to self-study, then just go grab a book on the recommended book list. If you are taking AP courses at your school, then I suppose you need to talk to your councellors.

I think it's fine to skip over prereqs. Then again, I'm mad at my school for not allowing me to take AP physics last year. At our school, it requires a session of summer school, which I couldn't do. I was going to make up the work through independent study, but they wouldn't let me. I ended up taking the honors course instead. I still took the AP test, and got a 5, which was a better score than many of the people got who were in the AP class.

And of course, all the schools are different. For example, at my school, the normal honors route is honors 10th grade english, then English Language junior year. I don't know what your school does.

I know how you feel about other people being allowed to do something you weren't, though. It's annoying.
