<p>Anyone have a favorite translation that they'd recommend? I read it once in high school, but can't recall the translator. Fangles has a new one, and I like his Iliad.</p>

<p>Fagles' translation is great, although I haven't read another one so I don't know how it compares.</p>
<p>When I was in AP Latin in HS, we used the translation by John Dryden, that seemed to work brilliantly.</p>
<p>Fagles' translation is a little "free and loose" for my taste. He's an amazing literary stylist... but it isn't Virgil.</p>
<p>I recommend Robert Fitzgerald's translation.</p>
<p>^ I agree that the Fagle's translation seems to take a lot of liberties in order to work in meter. Most frustrating of all, especially for translation, the lines do not match up at all with the original Latin!</p>
<p>Dryden's is alright, but I think it's a little archaic.</p>
<p>I would recommend David West's translation. It's accurate and very readable.</p>

<p>I bought the Fitzgerald, on the grounds that I've already read Fangles's Iliad and wanted to mix it up (and Dryden wasn't available at the bookstore).</p>
