Vermont for fall folliage weekend?

Hi - I’ve wanted to go to Vermont for fall folliage for decades. Looks like we might be able to this fall (yay!). Does anyone have recommendations on places to stay - that could be a home base for short bike rides, a bit of hiking - in a picturesque area? Looking for something not super pricey :grinning: The internet is overwhelming!!

I saved this link for fall foliage.

Gorgeous time to go to Vermont….but lodging during peak foliage for this year could be challenging.

I love Woodstock Vermont.

I’ve been to Stowe twice. Stayed at Stowe Mountain Resort and Trapp family Lodge. Hope you get to go!

It depends on what week you’re thinking off and what month. I will be staying a more neutral place, if fall comes early, then I don’t have to drive farther to see it.

It’ll be very challenging to find lodging at this late date. Manchester and Woodstock are big and have lots to do. If you’re looking for small/quaint, Newfane and Grafton are nice.

I would recommend Waterbury Vermont. It may be cheaper than Stowe and you could get to Stowe very easily. The town has restaurants and is known for its beer culture.

You could also try a bed and breakfast in the Mad River Valley. Overall there will be less places to eat and drink but the views and hikes will be similar.

If you want to go to a resort in Vermont that will set you up to go hiking, bike riding, picnicing, leaf peeping, and lots more, take a look at Twin Farms in Barnard, VT. The food is excellent. It’s pricey, but an amazing splurge. People book spots far in advance, but there might be cancellations. We went for our 35th anniversary.

Arlington Vermont is very nice. There are a number of bed and breakfast places including the Arlington Inn, Whitney House Inn also.

If you go there, plan to visit Hildene in Manchester Vermont…

We did a bike trip around Lake Champlain last fall to see the leaves. It started and ended near Burlington. It was fun,.

We are heading to Woodstock and staying at the Inn later in the fall. It looks quite lovely. We’ve stayed at the Equinox in Manchester for three of the most beautify fall days I can remember.

New England in the fall is stunning.

It’s a bit early for foliage but this coming weekend at Mt Snow they have a wine festival. Lots of crafts, bands, food and bourbon tastings. Great views, 20 minutes to Stratton area so a fair number of housing options. Here is the info and a photo from the top of the mountain on September 25th last year so you can “calibrate” the color change. Hope you have a great trip.

I would skip VT and go up the Kangamangus ( spelling? ) highway in NH or out to Western MA ( Berkshires). Fewer tourists and still colorful leaves. IF you are going to VT, maybe try to stay in a local place and not a well known place( like the Equinox/StoweStratton). Fall is lovely in all of NE. You do have to plan your trip as places fill up but off the main drag is really how you want to do it. And if you do go to VT, I’d suggest a few extra nights and going to Canada. Montreal is a great place to visit in the Fall.
There are some great farmsteads all over NE. And they are more of an authentic experience. You can often buy maple syrup, honey etc and talk to the farmers.
A small village I’d suggest is Jackson, NH. Or in the Berkshires, around Great Barrington ( rather than Lenox). Williamstown is also nice. You can drive through MA and then go to VT. You have to time it well to catch the leaves but it’s enjoyable. Take Route 2 out the whole way to Williamstown.

These tips are amazing thank you all!!! This has been a long-term wish of mine. Hubby is not a fan of the long drive from our place but hoping we can swing it!!

Love all the options!!

I don’t think there will be bargains with lodging during peak foliage season (think first week of October). So many places will be great. But I’ll put in a plug for where I lived for 31 years, the Mad River Valley. I also lived in Woodstock for 2 years. Both would be awesome.

Agree, though sometimes if you aren’t in a more popular place (like Woodstock) prices can be a bit more gentle. Though not a bargain for sure. Prices for hotels, IMO, have gone through the roof everywhere. People are finally getting out and about and AirBnB rentals have exposed people to more places.

I booked for the first week of Oct a while back, but my hotel is free, thanks to Citi Thank You points.

Thank you for these additional tips!! Much appreciated! :maple_leaf:

Kancamagus, or “The Kanc” … limited access, limited services, two lane rd through the Whites, just south of North Conway. If you don’t mind the glacial pace of traffic, always pretty, but rarely uncrowded during leaf season.
