Hello;
Thank you in advance for the help. My name is Charlie and for my first year of college, I attended Hofstra University. I got into Hofstra with a great Academic Scholarship. Between absolutely hating the school and dramatic occurrences in my life, I did horrible my first two semesters. My GPA dropped to a 1.35 and I was for a short time dismissed from the University. I made an appeal and got back in but was put on Academic probation. I decided to take off my third semester and I returned for my fourth. However, I did not return to Hofstra and decided to go to a community college. I am doing great at a community college. Through the first two semesters here I have a 3.9 GPA and really turned my college experience around. I was wondering how bad will those first two semesters at Hofstra affect admission into another four-year institution. I am looking into applying at CUNY Baruch, NYU, PACE University, and Fordham University. I will not be applying until i finish my second year here at community college. Thanks a lot in advance.

Well, transfer colleges will indeed look at your first year grades from Hofstra. However, your community college grades will be weighted more heavily, as they are more recent and you show a sharp upward trend in grades. An admissions counselor may simply conclude that you had a very rough time your first semester and needed some time to gather yourself, then went back and rocked it. Your toughest bet, of course, will be NYU, but you should have a relatively decent chance at Baruch, Pace, and Fordham.

Pace is by far an easy school to get into. I applied and was accepted with a 2.5gpa from a private NYC HS with 25 ACT 640 ENG 540 MATH 800 WRITING SAT.

Do note, I did not even know i was accepted until I received a call from them asking if I was going to attend.

Pace is my last choice. My first is NYU but I don’t think I will get accepted. My second choice is Fordham and my third is Baruch. What do you guys think the possibilities of getting into Fordham would be? BTW, my SAT scores were 690 on the Math and 600 on the ENG. My HS gpa was a 3.2.

Can you say what you really hated about the college? I haven’t visited but it seems online to have some good points…was it the students, professors, “feel”??
Just curious what went sour. Thanks, if you feel like sharing it.

wow…i am in the EXACT same position you are. same hs gpa. i had a 1.9 my first year of college, and now up to a 3.8. only difference is i was at a community college first and then went to university. i’m with you…i truly hope that they emphasize on the great upward trend in our GPAs. also, i plan on finding a way to explain my difficulty through my first year (medical problems). hopefully they look at the improvement. Good luck! =)

daviman22 - Considering you’re a second year student, I’m assuming you’re applying as a junior. In that case your SATs and HS GPA will hardly matter. You need to focus on your college GPA, since your high school isn’t much of a factor at this point. Also keep in mind most unis require good recs, so perform your best in at least 2 classes so you can get those recs. Remember, nail those admissions essay as well. I think those 3 components to admissions are the most important than anything else, if you’re a junior transfer.

Extra curricular activities are important, but these days students can make up their resume, so I don’t think admissions will weigh that as heavily as the prior 3 factors I mentioned, unless it’s significant, i.e. national awards, or any well known awards for that matter.
