Is it even possible for someone with a 3.85 UW GPA and 4.234 W GPA to get into a BA/MD program? I also have a 35 ACT, 800 Math II, 790 Bio, 730 Chem. Looking at the results from previous years, I feel like it’s almost improbable that I’d get into a BA/MD program.
My EC’s and recs are very good (no research, however). But, I feel like my stats don’t meet the cutoff. I applied to Brown PLME ED and I have many science and humanities/fine arts EC’s. However, my GPA is lacking.
What do you guys think about this? I would appreciate honest feedback. Thanks!
Adcoms look at the transcript and see where you got less than A. If it’s cores, yes, this could be a competitive issue. Also, without stating your health related ECs, we can’t guess what they are. It’s not quantity but the level of challenge and relevance. That’s a critical element.
If you are for certain you will be a physician, you should try to apply some lower ranking programs, you also could try some BS/DO programs which is easier to get in.
However, you should prepare for large expense to fly all over the place for interviews. It is very time consuming and it is not for a weak hart.
@DaveNBuster First you should NOT assume anything just because the stats posted have higher GPAs. In the last 3 cycle results thread, there are only close to 20-25 posts / year out of the 500+ BS/MD students. Admission is not just based on GPA alone. It is one of at least 6-8 key criteria. GPA and Test scores so clear and quantitative and hence every one talks about that only when some one gets admitted. But the other non-quantitative factors play a significant role. But it is almost Dec 1. You should have applied to few more and not just only for Brown. Even now it is possible to add few more, if you have the drive and energy in the next few days.
Hey, my D had similar gpa as you did and got into a great program at BU (though did not get even interview calls at not so well known ones, perhaps those just don’t look at other criteria). So nothing to despair about. Hope you applied to BU and to a range of schools. Check out all of this year’s stats and not just the first few and jump to conclusions. She met another girl at an interview who had relatively lower gpa but got into Rice/Baylor later apparently.
Apart from just the stats some of the good schools look at the rigor of your coursework, competitiveness of the school, possible grade deflation, number of AP courses in BCPM and scores, your involvement and achievement in science, subject test scores, essays, interviews and the whole nine yards.
Also noticed you applied ED to Brown, so aren’t you supposed to commit if selected, irrespective of whether you get into their medical program or not? So why worry about something else? Apply for few med programs in case it doesn’t work out at Brown. I am sure you can squeeze in half a dozen or so starting even now.
