Very stressed and a complicated situation!

Okay… I have a very complicated situation. I am very independent and trying to manage as many things as possible. The stress is really catching up and I have fell into a few depressions with myself in the recent months. I have gone to counselors numerous times, and it rarely helps. I am not giving up though. To get started, I have had a very tough past and did not do great in high school. I ended with a 2.8. Next, I go to community college in California. I didn’t do great my first year, but I have been doing stellar this past year and will continue for the next 2 semesters. I am applying for Fall 2020 to transfer to university. My major will be either business, finance, or economics. My GPA will be around 3.3-3.4 when I apply.

My 2 problems:

1.) Low GPA: 3.3-3.4

2.) I only have Business Statistics completed as a math

I have completed every other class I need to transfer except the calculus classes.

My colleges that I am aiming for are: University of San Francisco, Arizona State University, Saint Mary’s College in California

If you guys could give me any sort of confidence or help, I would really appreciate it.
I just want to know if I will be okay, and if I have a good chance in any of these. I am very passionate and have grown so much from what I used to be. I know I can do this!

I get very stressed when I think of my math, I really keep questioning if me missing calculus will break my chances for any of these schools. If you can let me know guys, I would really feel so much better. Im in need of some help.

OK, deep breaths.

  1. You have a year to pull your GPA up. And a 3.3-3.4 isn't "Low" anywhere but on this website.
  2. Why don't you take Calculus I sometime in the next year?
  3. Here's teh thing about going to counselors: the work they do doesn't seem obvious at first. It's a gradual process of building trust and getting to know each other. So going to counselors plural probably isn't in your best interests-- probably much better to get recommendations for one, then give it 6 months or so before trying another.

I can’t put Calc in my schedule, I’ll have too many classes with it included. I wanted to see if I would be able to take it at the new university maybe. Let me know if this is feasible.

Why not self study? Lookup the syllabus online, buy the book and start reading.

Better yet, Khan Academy has plenty of free videos. This will help build your self confidence, so that by the time class starts you’ll have a basic knowledge of calculus.

We don’t know the policies at those places. You need to ask them if it is OK to wait and take Calculus after you have transferred in.

Why not drop one of the other courses and take Calc if you need it?

Oh, and I personally would absolutely NOT use Khan Academy to self study Calc. Sol Khan is a brilliant man. But he’s not a math teacher. His explanations tend to be textbook and convoluted, not the kind of explanation a good teacher would give.

I can’t imagine that your schedule is full of courses more important than math.

Have you taken any math placement tests at your CC? If not, do that. You need to know if you are ready for Calculus, or if you need another class first to get you ready for that.
