Vet Tech?

Was hoping to get some feedback.

I'm 21, due to graduate with my biology degree in the spring from a community college. I was originally going to transfer to a university to complete my bachelor's and eventually aim for vet school. My community college has a veterinary technology degree program that is two years long. I am a late bloomer who struggled during high school and didn't care about my first year of college. I was originally a psychology major but realized that wasn't what I wanted to do. During my second and third year at the community college I was a biology major, and I will finally be graduating with a biology degree.

I'm finding it really difficult to get any experience with animals and feel like vet school will frown upon that. I also want to be in the field already before I jump into vet school. Locally, most shelters aren't accepting new volunteers, or do not participate in volunteering or shadowing for insurance reasons. I think becoming a veterinary technician would be a good way for me to work in the field and gain experience with animals while in school to pursue a higher degree.

Should I transfer immediately after I get my biology degree, or stay an extra two years to get my degree in vet technology? I will be 24 when I go to a university and I know people say it's not too old, but it seems like it is.
