Viewbooks- What info do you look for?

Hi everyone,
I am just curious. When you are picking a University and you look at the viewbook, what kind of information do you look for about the specific faculties and programs?
I like to read about them in detail, but it seems more and more of them are just putting in really short blurbs.

Viewbooks are not how you research a school. It is a photo album to create interest not to give depth of information.

Okay fine, I can see your point, but that is not what I asked. I am just curious to know if I am the only one who wants to read more of the info, rather than just quick blurbs.

I would say that a viewbook is not an indication of what a school is, but what a school would want itself to be ideally. This doesn't mean the viewbook can not be a very good resource - you can get a feel of what the campus feels like by looking at the viewbook. I would look for info about academic requirements, housing, diversity of the student body - statistics can be important, how many people are on financial aid etc.

I agree with you bogororo. I don't think it should be the only resource used, but I like looking through them and getting a first look at the campus and just see what they're all about.

look for photos of pretty girls. if the campus has alot of pretty girls, and you are into pretty girls, the viewbook will definitely have a few of those pretty faces in it.

But dont you guys think that viewbooks/website designs has got a correlation to the number of applicants that a college receive?? Take Middlebury for example, has a gorgeous website and a viewbook!! And look again the number of applicants this year!! :p

Yep, but it's definitely true that there's nothing much on viewbooks. It's better to check out other guides!! Viewbooks are just glossy books that entice applicants. Haha, like Colby's and Middlebury's!!

But I don't think all of them are like that. Some of the ones I have gotten from Unis in the UK are full of information, and sure they have pictures hyping up the location, etc. but they also have all the info on program, application process, etc.
Still, I think it is kind of fun to get a really cool looking VB!! The glossier the better! :)

Yep, I agree with Waldo. The ones from the UK are chock-full of informations about programs and housing and programs and more programs and some activities they have, though we all know the UK isn't as EC-crazed as the US. sigh One reason I don't like the UK system that much. It [their viewbook] is rather like a mini-version of the catalogue for American universities.
