Villanova Honors / Scholarships Discussion

Is it safe to assume that since I was not selected for the Honors Program, I have no shot at Presidential?

@hikewithd I am with you. My son was invited to honor program, but didnā€™t invited to apply St Augustine. He applied Presidential. OMG, 8 essays. I read again Nova website regarding Presidential scholarship, The finalist who did not win the scholarship will get $16,000 partial scholarship which is higher than St Augustine (15,000). And Nova does not offer multiply scholarships to a student. I think maybe your daughter is the finalist. We shall see outcome very soon, before 1/31, correct?

@jonathanNJ Iā€™ve seen some comments on CC that some of the students who were finalists received 25/26k if they were not recipients. We always try to keep a positive outlook on these things, but it is discouraging to see others in similar situations get offered the St. Augustine and your kid being offered nothingā€¦with the hope that the Presidential is still in the cards for her. However, with the amazing choice of students they have to choose from, how do we know where we stand in this process? The process is a lengthy one and everyone keeps telling me to ā€œembrace itā€.

@hikewithd I donā€™t think applying ED increases your chances for a scholarshipā€¦in fact, I would think the chances would be come less with ED, but I am also in the same boat with you in that this is our oldest. It is a learning process.

Feeling the same as you all above. My son was invited into the honors college but did not receive word about the St. Augustine. Hoping heā€™s still in the running for Presidential!

Anyone hear anything about Presidential today?

Radio silence here.

nothing here

Someone in my class called and they said by the end of the week, probably Wednesday or Thursday. Emails will be sent and portals updated.

DD just got the e-mail and portal update. Didnā€™t get Presidential (or Honors or Augustine invite). Sheā€™s already in at much better schools (including Michigan and UVA Engineering), so at $67K for full pay, Villanova is most definitely off the list. 1520 SATā€™s, top 5% of her class, great ECā€™s and recommendations and excellent essays (but leadership and community service were solid, but not extraordinary). Villanova may have gotten the basketball bump, but itā€™s still very far from being top tier academically - it only became nationally ranked by US News within the last year or two, itā€™s still very homogeneous and it lacks many of the features of a top tier university (music program, etc.) Thereā€™s a lot to like about Villanova, but I canā€™t see it being a consideration for a top student without huge incentives.

Daughter got the bad news as well. It must have been extremely competitive but without any money this may have sealed the deal on Villanova. Have to make the trip to ND and see if sheā€™ll be comfortable that far away from home. Good luck to everyone.

@nmargaret @hikewithd, sorry to hear your news but it seems both of your daughters have some great options! My son also applied to UVA (OOS) and he was outright rejectedā€¦likely because his private school has many Virginia residents. @hikewithd I hope your daughter likes NDā€¦it is a very welcoming community. The admitted students days in April should give her a good feel for it. I have heard the dorm life is really fun because of the small frat/sorority like communities. Keep us posted on what they decide!

It is frustrating. Villanova also offers Need based aid. Then they have these Merit based scholarships like the Augustine and Presidential which also include language that looks to ā€œfavorā€ Need based individuals.

ā€œIfā€ they are using the same need based metrics itā€™s really another form of the same targeted group of needy based aid. I would like to see these schools adopt clear policy and language for some merit based scholarships that will look to capture individuals with ā€œneedā€ that is not reflected in the individuals CSS or FAFSA.

There often is a redundancy in these merit based scholarships otherwise and a serious remaining gap where merit is deserving and there is a remaining unidentified unmet need.

Best Wishes to all those who received a pass to the next phase of the Presidential Scholarship. Itā€™s well deserved and a Wonderful thing.

Be Proud as Nova is a Wonderful future for you.

For the St. Augustine Essay the website says it should be one page in length, does anyone know what spacing to use?

My son didnā€™t make to the presidential finalist. He wasnā€™t invited to apply St Augustine. Best wish to all the kids made to the finalists list.

My son just canceled hotel reservation on 2/8. It is meaningless to go to honor program presentation without expecting any scholarship or FA. He has perfect scores on ACT and 2 Subject tests, 3.97 UW GPA. We just have to wait a little bit longer for RD result then. Wish everyone good luck!

I saw on the honors college brochure that they enroll 120-140 honors college students per class. Iā€™ve also read that they want to enroll 30 Presidential Scholars and 80 St. Augustine Scholars.

I qualified for Honors College and got an invited to St. Augustine, but was rejected from Presidential.

So since Iā€™m in honors does that mean my chance for St. Augustine is pretty high?
Even if they enroll 140 honors college students, that leaves 80 St. Augustine scholarships for the remaining 110 students after the Presidential Scholarships are given.

Am I correct? Or can St. Augustine scholarships be given outside of Honors college?

Just got an email the other day saying Iā€™m a finalist for the Presidential Scholarship! There were 2,037 nominations this year which is A LOT and they only picked 46 finalists so please do not feel discouraged!

Anyone know if the St. Augustine essay has to be double-spaced? The description only says 1 page maximum

Does anyone know when the recipients of St. Augustine will be announced? Is there an interview for finalists or once you send in the essay are you done?

Saw a post about it from last year where people got their decisions around Feb 16. This may not be the same for this year since EA decisions were released a month early last year.
