Villanova scholarship

Today I received a letter in the mail saying I was named a finalist for the Villanova scholarship. The letter says it is unconnected to the Presidential Scholarship, which I already applied for. Does anyone know anything about this scholarship, including how much it is worth? I couldn't find that information online.

My daughter got the same leter. Below is from the Villanova website:

The Villanova Scholarship is awarded on the basis of exemplary academic achievement and accomplishments outside of the classroom. In order to be eligible for consideration, students will need to be enrolled in a rigorous curriculum, rank in the top 5% of their graduating class (if rank is reported), or have a minimum grade point average of a 3.85 on a 4.00 weighted scale (if rank is not reported) and a minimum combined SAT of 1380/1600 or a composite score of 31/36 on the ACT.

For the 2012-13 academic year, scholarships (beginning at $1,000 per year) were distributed to 1,120 admitted students for a total of $6 million. The average, non-negotiable scholarship amount was valued at $5,357 per year. Recipients of the scholarship averaged a 4.17/4.00 GPA on a weighted scale and 1460/1600 on the SAT or a 33/36 composite on the ACT.

My question is…does this mean she is out of the running for Presidential or can she be considered for both? I know the Presidential semifinalists won’t be announced until February.

My son also got the same letter.

Does anyone know the answer to MomOfLotsOfGirls question about being out of the running for Presidential scholarship consideration?

I don’t think that means they are out of running for Presidential Scholarship. Usually there is a committee for the Presidential Scholarship and the Villanova Scholarship committee probably has no connection or information about who even is in the running for the Presidential Scholarship.

Also, a few years ago, the Villanova Scholarship was awarded based on interviews with either the admissions office (if the candidate lived close) or alumni in the candidate’s area. I think everyone that did the interview was awarded some sort of scholarship, but I am not sure.

My daughter is currently a Presidential Scholar. At the time, the only information she received was for the Presidential Scholarship since anyone who interviewed for it and did not receive it was given a 1/2 tuition scholarship. However, things are always changing and I can’t say for sure.

As I understand it, the Presidential Scholarship committee works independently. The Villanova Scholarship finalists are announced without even considering if they are Pres Scholar nominees. The same thing happened to me.

I am an American living abroad who hoped to receive the Villanova Scholarship based on my academic results. I was wondering if all of you received this notice via mail, email, or from checking myNova.

I have yet to receive any news, but if things were sent by post then there is still hope because mail reaches me much later than my American peer applicants!

My daughter received one of these notifications today as well, and she is also an applicant for the Presidential scholarship. It seems a little bit strange to me with the cost of Villanova that they would have a scholarship that has finalists and interviews that is potentially for $1000. Every little bit helps but that seems ridiculously low. Good Luck to everyone interviewing!!!

I emailed Villanova and they said you CAN be a finalist for the Villanova Scholarship AND potentially receive the Presidential Scholarship. However, if you are awarded the Presidential Scholarship, you do not also receive the Villanova Scholarship since the Presidential Scholarship covers full tuition. They also said that if you are a finalist for both scholarships, you will participate in two interviews.

How did you receive this notification though? Anyone?

We got a letter in the regular mail.

Just got an email. Thanks.

Has anyone else still not been contacted by an interviewer? I received the letter saying I am a finalist for the scholarship and it says to email them if I have not been contacted by today 1/24… Will be emailing then shortly

Yes, I would email them. My interviewer lives in VA and I live in CT so we need to do it over skype…thought that was pretty strange.

Never mind… Just contacted!

@ealdi94- yeah that is pretty strange… But definitely more common nowadays! A lot of my friends had similar situations with other schools!

Has anyone had their Villanova Scholarship interview yet? How long did it last? What questions did they ask?

I still haven’t been contacted by my interviewer. I sent an email to the address in my letter, but I have not heard back yet.

Anyone else in this sitaution?

There were probably a bunch of people and it takes some time to go through all those emails and they may be trying to contact the interviewers as well…so probably be patient on that.

pd2012 - I had the interview a couple years back and it was pretty basic. The alumni I met with was very relaxing and it was more a conversation about what I had done in high school, why I wanted to go to Villanova. I think he had a couple questions he had to ask, but other than that there wasn’t really any format. He told me that he just had to send a report back to the admissions office. But overall, it wasn’t anything to get nervous over.

joe125, Thanks. Any idea what percentage of finalists for the Villanova Scholarship end up being awarded money?
