Villanova vs Northeastern vs Boston College

Alright, so I've been accepted to Villanova and Northeastern for business and deferred from BC. Northeastern also invited me into their honors program. Right now, I want to decide what my number one choice will be if I don't get into BC. I'm planning on attending their early candidates days and determining which school is best for me. I'm leaning towards nova right now, but I'm still unsure about the social life and Philadelphia. I like Boston and I can see myself living there. Which is my best option?

Bump…

I’d go with Nova. It is the better ranked school and although rankings in and of themselves are not terribly important, from what I know its students seem to do well even in this tough job market both in terms of getting jobs and getting into grad schools. The school is pretty close to Phila. and people I know enjoy being there. I’d pursue Northeastern mainly if the coop program really appeals to you (it did not appeal to us but that is a personal choice).

Bump…

Villa Nova may be better known/respected overall (especially on the east coast) but in business? Hmm. As the parent of a Northeastern grad, I can tell you that my daughter - and all of her friends - had jobs on graduation. Her friends who studied business often had more than one offer.

That said, these are two very different schools. I think you should really ask yourself what it is you’re seeking in your undergraduate education, what type of students you want to hang out with, what kind of experience you want. For example, I think few would argue that BC (don’t know about VN) tends to attract more liberal arts types, and more knowledge-for-knowledge’s sake “intellectual” types. At NEU, the students tend to be much more professionally oriented. NEU also doesn’t offer the very traditional type of education since at any point in the year, a lot of your friends may be off-campus and on co-op. It’s also a lot bigger, attracts a more diverse student body, and obviously differs in vibe, location-wise.

@katliamom Villanova’s business school is extremely well-ranked in business (#7 undergrad according to Businessweek whereas Northeastern is #38). Rankings aren’t everything but as far as business goes, Villanova has a significant advantage.

NE is more on the Co-op side, so these students have job experience before graduation…which could be the reason behind a quick job offer at or before graduation.

^^^ I stand corrected, on Villanova. Thanks strom23 - always good to learn something new. My daughter did science at NEU, hence my weak knowledge of business program rankings.

OP, you didn’t mention $$$$. Unless your parents are affluent and generous that needs to be considered. What is the bottom line cost (pay plus loans) at Northeastern and Villanova? Neither school would be worth paying or borrowing $20,000/year more than the other. This would also be the case when considering BC.

Northeastern offered me 12K scholarship and the total financial aid would be 17.5K all together. I am an only child and my parents will pay for the college of my choice. I’m still leaning towards Nova but I’m still skeptical on its social scene or lack there of. I do like their business program more than Northeasterns and BC’s.

BC (>/=) Nova > NEU

BC and Nova pretty much have the same campus setting. They are both outside the city in wealthy suburbs. Northeastern is in the city. BC and Nova are clearly the better business schools; NEU is more engineering.

If interested might look at Holy Cross-has January 15th application due date and one of the best alumni networks for business and on Wall Sreet. HC was ranked 12th this year by CNBC Payscale salary for highest alumni salaries(ivies included). Agree with others Nova and Northeastern are very different.
