My understanding is yes, deferred to EA round. My niece only applied to VT ED and was deferred. Scrambled to get out some RD apps elsewhere, but still hoping for good VT news with the EA acceptances. Trying to understand how likely that may/may not be.
Have never seen stats on those deferred from ED to EA; however, the overall (per this website)
EA acceptance rate is much higher than ED in the past. This is from CC overview of the school:
The early decision acceptance rate at Virginia Tech is 57% , compared to an overall acceptance rate of 70%. Virginia Tech accepts about 77% of early action applicants
TL;DR: Niece has a very good chance!!
@Ted7 So the electronics/toy manufacturer is announcing something on the 18th as well?
@gcmom1 CCās data is either incorrect, outdated, or both. Recent year offered rate for most majors is well under 60%. Some majors have been under 55% for 4+ years. Itās important for applicants to know that any āoverallā stat isnāt a good predictor of your chances to get an offer, in particular recently.
@Whit26 Deferred EDās can be offered at either EA or can be deferred again to RD. The 3 stage process is relatively new for VT, but in the past couple of years the trend (anecdotally) has been that many of the RD offers were given to those who were deferred previously rather than to true RD applicants. VT has said as much - if you wait to apply RD your chances are substantially less than ED or EA (even if deferred).
@Rue4 EDās can be deferred a 2nd time to RD, FYI.
Thanks, interesting! Can you point me towards more accurate info? I had thought this in the general ballpark, with more EA acceptances than ED.
We didnāt do ED, just EA. Is 77% for all EA or just deferred ED kids?
Well, I donāt want to be spreading incorrect info, and @ShenVal18 said this info (posted here on College Confidentialās main page if you search for VT), is not up to date, with more recent data showing lower acceptance rates. The way I read these stats, these are all of the applicants in EA, not just those deferred from ED to EA. My point was to say that, historically, EA had a higher acceptance rate than ED (and to give us all hope)!!
Thank you. Best of Luck to your niece!!!
Thanks for the information.
@gcmom1 @olegec Iām not sure where CC got the info re: offer rates by admissions type (ED, EA, RD). I havenāt seen those specifics posted by the university anywhere over the past several years. I may have just missed it, but it appears that it may be an aggregate of stats that have been posted in other outlets. Google results donāt render anything that specific from VT itself. US News, Niche, Collegunia toss out stats but their overall admission offer % is off the mark enough that I would think the by type could be off too.
My post re: acceptance was more of a cautionary that overall rates can be misleading since the offer rates to individual colleges at the university can vary by quite a lot. This likely holds true at each stage, since it looked like a lot of CoE ED applicants were deferred to EA last year.
The good news is if you got the app in by ED or EA deadline you have a substantially higher chance of getting an offer than if you waited until RD.
The link below shows offer rates overall and you can also drill down by individual college. 56% last cycle overall.

WOW!! The Stat Chart is amazing! Great information. The stats on female engineer enrollment is very interesting.
Wow, they accepted 1700 in state engineering kids and 7300 out of state kids?
Our oldest daughter applied last year RD in Biology with a 4.25 GPA, 8 AP classes, 8 Honors classes, DE Class, 31 ACT, and oodles of extra curricular activities and Honors (state and national). She was waitlisted then ultimately rejected. She was crushed because even though she applied to 19 other schools (where she was accepted to all but UNC Chapel Hill), VT was her first choice - in state and she loved the campus.
This year our identical twins applied EA. I told them not to get their hopes up because of not only their older sisterās experience but because when we took the tour they repeatedly told us they were looking for first generation college students and to create a more diverse group on campus by admitting more out of state and International students. They have similar stats but applied to very specific majors (Fish Conservancy and the other Archeology).
It will be interesting to see if they have better luck.
@ADH0621 Yield is what drives enrollment. Traditionally a lot more offers go to OOS students because admissions factors in that many OOS may ultimately choose in-state options once finances are full considered. VT doesnāt hand out a ton of merit scholarships either, so OOS conversions can trend lower because of that as well.
Yes you are right, I see the yield is much lower, but still, they enrolled 1200 out of state engineering vs. 930 in state engineering. And itās the stateās engineering flagship school.
Read your post and could totally relate. My oldest son is currently a Biology major at VT (class of 2024). We are OOS and he was accepted to every school he applied to except for UMD (which is in-state for us). We were all slightly befuddled at the rejection. VT even offered him a small merit scholarship and he is thriving. I said the same thing to my middle son (donāt get your hopes up regarding UMD) and the same thing happened to him a few weeks ago. He got into Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt (w/substantial merit offer), South Carolina, WVU, etcā¦so he has great options and heās waiting to hear from VT. The admissions process is so hit or miss. Good luck to your twins.
@ADH0621 The school canāt control who accepts an offer of admission. Those numbers could very well have flipped. In fact they pretty much did in 2020.
Although the acceptance rate for VT has traditionally been in the 60-70% range, the rate last year 2021 dropped to 44%! VT is a much more selective school now than it had been.
And 44% was the average across all majors. Acceptance rate for school of architecture was 31%, 33% in engineering, 41% in business. If you are applying to one of those schools VT was very selective last year.
What we donāt know is if 2021 was an anomaly and acceptance rates will jump back up to the 60s, or if this is the new reality for VT. Given that the big change last year was the test optional, and thatās still in place, Iām expecting the acceptance rates will be in the 30s again this year in those majors
Edit: The numbers above are for in-state. OOS acceptance rates are higher.
