I’ve read mixed information on whether VA Tech reads the Common App essay. Can someone confirm? My son is writing the 4 supplemental essays and is wondering whether to use material from his Common App essay in one of the four supplemental essays if they don’t read it. Thanks!
Went to an information session this year and the VT admissions rep was very clear that they do not read the common app essay.
Thanks! He’ll do some recycling then for one of the essays.
so even we checked the box for “include your common app essay” the admission still won’t read it at all?
We were told they don’t consider it, but beyond that I don’t know. A quick call to admissions would confirm whether they read it or not.
thx!
Do you mean they don’t read the general common app essay, or they don’t read the questions that are specific to VTech?
The common app essay. They definitely read their prompts
How hard it is to get into college of neuroscience at VT? Any thoughts?
What is everybody doing at 7:30pm EDT tonight? Better be watching ESPN!
4.3gpa 34act instate got waitlisted for neuroscience last year (fall 22 entry) - outrageous but true.
Did you apply ED or EA? Did you eventually get am acceptance?
It’s 11/2, where is everyone?! The EA/ED deadline has passed and now we anxiously wait! My son has his heart set on going to VT!! No other school is even a close second so this mom is a nervous wreck for him! I went to UVA and his sister goes to JMU but he has always wanted to be a Hokie! He of course applied ED, GPA 3.86, mix of honors/AP/DE classes, NHS, DECA Executive VP, Marketing student of the year last year, travel hockey (2 seasons Assistant Captain) since he was a little kid and he hopes to play on the D2 club hockey team if he gets into VT. He applied to the College of Liberal Arts, major “Philosophy, Politics, and Economics”. I wish they could put a second choice major if they aren’t 100% sure. That’s what he’s most interested in right now as he avidly follows politics and he loved Econ last year and is taking AP Econ this year. But it’s scary not knowing how many seats a particular major has. Competition is stiff for college in this day and age! One thing I wish colleges had the ability to do is proctored essays. My son worked so hard on his VT and common app essays 100% on his own. They didn’t even work on them in DE English this year like they did when my daughter was in high school. I think kids should have to write essays on the spot, like taking the SATs. That’s really the only way colleges can be assured the words are the applicant’s. But I guess that’s a whole other topic of discussion. Good luck to everyone!
Good luck to your son! He is ahead of the game— according to the website the EA deadline isn’t until 12/1.
Thanks! Yes Early Action is 12/1 but Early Decision was 11/1. If he’s accepted it’s binding and that’s what he’s hoping for!
Good luck to him! In the VT data website it says the offer rate for that major is 71.5% (last year 137 applied, 98 offered) and it sounds like he has a great profile for it.

@JESmom thank you for sharing that! I didn’t realize that detail was available. Very helpful and encouraging.
Yes, of course! I just mean that might be why it’s a little quiet here. Best of luck to your son!
Yes you are right. When I first posted I was thinking EA was 11/1 like ED. I’m sure there will be a lot more activity on here in another month or so!
