If you lived in NC and were admitted to both schools, where would you go and why?
Would it be hard to get a scholarship to either?

NC State - My son is an engineering student and State has an excellent program. The cost difference between the two schools as an NC resident made VT not worth it to us. It is difficult to get scholarships at both schools. When we visited VT we were told their merit scholarships were need based. That doesn’t sound like a merit scholarship to me, but that’s what they said.

If you are going to NC State for engineering pick NC State. For any other major pick VT. I have had children at both schools out of state for us. VT is by far a better school for all majors, except engineering. In that case it is a close call. NC State is behind the times in terms of Career center and has limited job opportunities for most majors. The academic level of students in the general population is also higher at VT. VT has contacts all over the east coast, especially in the Northern VA, Maryland and DC areas where jobs are prevalent.

what if I were to mix it up and say I would like to major in civil engineering? Doesn’t virginia Tech have a better reputation in that field than state? I would consider cost over name though obviously

If you live in NC, it would not be worth all the extra money you would spend going to VT just for name value. Are your parents willing to pay the extra cost for VT?

If you graduate with an engineering degree, It’s doubful that a potential employer would hire/not hire based on the university you attended considering both schools are large well known state schools with repected engineering programs. It’s more about your school record, job experiences and how you present yourself.
