Has anyone taken a virtual high school course? D is thinking of taking AP Human Geography through Illinois Virtual High School because it's not offered at her high school. There are lots of AP offerings, but not this one). Any thoughts on how these courses work out? Is there a particular work style that's required?

I'm a sophomore, and at the end of this year I'll have taken somewhere around 11 (2 Standard, 2 honors, 3 AP, 4 college). The kind/amount of work depends almost completely on the teacher. For AP classes, the teacher will normally assign readings out of a textbook, quizzes from the textbook companion site, online "field trips", and online quizzes/tests.

This means one will have to be a lot more independent, and certain online classes can be very hard for those of us who are audio/visual and don't do well with just written texts. Online courses are, for the most part, guided self-studies with a grade.

Another thing you might want to think about is how the teaching works. In many classes, teachers will give "participation grades" or discount tests/quizzes the class doesn't do well on. Online teachers have no such compassion.

Online classes are a very good option for some people, but a lot of people fail them. Even those who have been very successful in past courses.

Good luck!
