Visit to OSU

Also, @ NervousNellie: If they lose their BuckID, they can just logon to buckid.osu.edu and deactivate the card from there, probably a bit simpler and much easier to remember.

NervousNellie. Did you happen to have the IT center at OSU install MS Office for your S while on campus? I called last week and they said they could do that while we are at orientation, and they can also set S up on the OSU network etc.

@ Nova88-no, we just bought the MS Office 2011 (Mac) from WiredOut and then after lunch he was sitting in the Union and installed it there himself. It is a disc-very easy to do. I am sure he will do the OSU network thing when he gets there or maybe someone else can answer what exactly that is and how soon they should do it.

@ OSULolz-thanks for the info on deactivating the BUCKid card. Hopefully it won’t ever come to that.

Piada, a chain but only in Columbus now…started by the Brio guy. It is Italian Chipotle in brief, check out the their website for better description. Short north is home to loads of great places to eat, we have often just picked one driving through and have always been happy. Hubbard St grill latest and so good, favorite is Marcella’s.
My dd is a tour guide in the afternoons, hope you have a great visit!

NervousNellie or anyone who has already attended orientation—heading to Columbus for orientation on Sunday. Wondering if there were any key sessions at orientation for parents you recommend NOT missing? We are OOS, so if anyone has recommendations specific for OOS parents, appreciate any guidance! Looking forward to it! Thanks.

@ Nova88-I would attend everything you possibly can since you will be there. All of the presentations were very good. At least from a parent’s perspective. My S thought some of them were “stupid” but hey-they know everything. :-)

On the first day I was able to take a tour of the North dorms. I wanted to take pictures so I could remember the layout. There were some things on the second day that we didn’t get to do that I really thought would be beneficial: Campus Employment, Career Exploration, OSU 101: Life as a Buckeye, Study Abroad/Passport Information. These are all sessions that are pretty much after the things you “have” to attend on the second day. There was just not enough time to do it all.

As far as the other presentations you are scheduled to go to, I think if you go to them, you will have a very comfortable and good feeling about things when you are done.

Enjoy yourself-can’t wait to hear how it went for you guys!

@NervousNellie1

I couldn’t visit the dorms during my orientation because I had to go take my language placement test, but could you tell me your thoughts on them? I’ve seen a single room on a previous visit but it was so crowded, I couldn’t get a good look. Odd question but did you see how high off the ground the beds were? I ask because I’m not getting my bed lofted but I still want to store things in crates/boxes under it using bed risers.

@cazee88: The beds are made so that they can easily be taken apart (slightly) and adjusted for height. My bed freshmen year was at a decent height for storage when I got there, but can be easily changed. May require 2 people to make it easy

@cazee88-The one I saw during orientation was a quad so it had 2 sets of bunk beds. I actually didn’t look to see how high off the ground they were and now wish I would have. I bought my S 2 underbed storage boxes that are no higher than 7". He will be sharing the under the bed space with another person and these are small boxes. 2 will probably cover no more than 1/2 the space.

OSULolz has lots of good answers so I would go with what was said above this post. :-)

Thank you to you both! Being a only child I’ve never had to share anything and could throw my stuff all over the room. Now I have to start worrying about where I toss my things. Good to hear that the bed can be adjusted some. I wished that they came with the option of “half” lofting them.

This may be too late to help Nova88, but on the 2nd day of Orientation, there is a session (parents only) for out of state students. This was very helpful - things like transportation were covered.

There was also a session (I believe it was right after the one I just mentioned) about insurance. We are also OOS and our health insurance (MA) only covers visits through an ER or urgent care center. Here I learned about the Wilcecare supplement, which is a great deal and my oldest DS has used it many times (unfortunately). Last year it was $187 for the year and is a clinic near the main library - it’s easy to get an appointment and most things are covered (may be a co-pay for meds). So if you have strep throat, ear infection, sprains (includes physical therapy we found out), you call or walk in (they have Sat appts) and they take good care of you.

Bearvet, thanks! We arrived in Columbus today, so not too late! I will be aure to attend the OOS parents session. We did already choose the Wilce Supplement too, sounds like we made the right call there, thanks for confirming. Fingers crossed for a great orientation session!!
