Visiting Bates...?

Hey everyone…

Well as im in the last stages of making a decision as to where to go, I was thinking if any of you have gone to Bates from NYC or around the NY region. Im planning on going alone and spending a night up there, but I dont know how to go…bus…or amtrak?? Which one would be better or would even go all the way to Lewiston?

If u guys have any info please relay it! thanks!!

Hey, I visited in mid December. The campus is beautiful, even with snow on the ground (which is obviously the norm!). I'm not to sure what spring is like, but I have heard the fall is also beautiful with all of the leafs. I drove up to Lewiston, so I really can't help you with the train stuff. I wish I had done an overnite so tell me how that goes. I already sent in my deposit for Bates so hopefully I will see you next year. Where else are u considering?

Let's see - Amtrak goes to Portland (the Downeaster to/from Boston), whereas I think you could get Greyhound all the way to Lewiston...you would have to connect a few times from NYC, though.

The easiest way to get to Bates from NYC while not driving:

1) Train from NYC to Boston - South Station

2) Walk from the train station to the bus station - about 200 yards

3) Take a Vermont Trailways (Greyhound) bus from South Station to Lewiston. Some buses will drop you off right at Bates College, while others drop you at the Lewiston Bus Station which is 5 miles from campus. You'd have to take a cab (or arrange ahead of time with Admissions to have someone pick you up).

To lookup buses from Boston to Bates College go to
http://www.greyhound.com
and plug in "Bates Coll" as your "To:" destination.
Or, plug in "Lewiston ME" as your "To:" destination for more buses (and less convenience on the Lewiston end).

DO NOT take the train from Boston to Portland. It is slow, and involves a change of train stations in Boston. Much like NYC has Penn Station and GCT, Boston has South Station and North Station. All Boston AMTRAK trains except the Portland train leave from South Station. Portland AMTRAK leaves from North Station (which is part of the Fleet Center/TD Banknorth Garden BTW).

Thanks a bUNCH guys! Really- i appreciate it a lot!

Well BillPrins, Im considering Penn State's Business College and University of Rochester (gave pretty good aid) along with Bates. If Bates gives me exCELLent fin aid then that will probably be the deciding factor. As of now I dont know, but will be able to tell in a week or so. Lets hope for the best.

Bman your post was really helpful. How much do you think Ill end up paying? Coz i dont want to pay a fortune...i would be willing to if I knew for sure that I was going there and that they gave me good aid or something.

Another thing, I havent received my fin aid package, so is their a way i could arrange a meeting with a Financial Aid advisor or something...? Who else should I meet there? I want everything planned. And is there any other campus event thats happening...? Thanks guys!

Don't go next week (i.e starting the 17th) bc they're on vacation. Unless you absolutely need to make a decision.

The best time is in Short Term. Green trees, wild parties, and happy students.
