i am visiting brown tomorrow, taking a tour, going to the info. session, and sitting in on a class. does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the most of my visit? anything would be appreciated!

Eat at the Ratty (the main cafeteria).
Explore Thayer Street.

Do like you do at the shoestore, walk around with it a lil bit and see how it feels. No parents, just you trying to get your own impressions from your own observations.

Go down Thayer street and visit the bookstore. You could also just see the the public side of Brown and see how not isolated the campus is lol.

My daughter and I visited yesterday. Although she had applied, it was not the highest preference on her list. After visiting (tour, info, session, talking with students at the cafeteria), we both came away very, very impressed and the school has moved way up the list. Between the kids, facilities, local environment, we came away thinking it was really unique and could be a great place for her to spend her next four years. We have seen most of the other Ivies and were a little concerned about certain elements of reputation (unfounded) and proximity to Providence (turns out to be a distinct positive). At the admissions office, try to spend time with the wonderful gentleman who will spend time with individual kids detailing his experiences over the decades. Although we were outside during a snow/freezing rain storm, we could not have had a better experience. The students giving the tours (often how we parents form opinions) were amongst the best we have seen.
Enjoy your day.

The “wonderful gentlemen” is a great guy indeed. “Proximity” to Providence though sounds a bit funny since Brown is in the middle of Providence, and actually where Providence began… :)

talk to random students, not just your tour guide. most would be happy to show you around

Come to city politics at 10:30 in Solomon 101 (yes, anyone can just walk in). And then after the class is over find a student, ask them if you can go to lunch with them (they may even swipe you in on their guest credit… I know I would) and talk about Brown’s good points and failings. The more outgoing and social and proactive you are while you’re here, the more you’ll get out of it.

…but leave some open time to wander around on your own, to eat in the Dining Commons and to ask random students about whether they are enjoying their experience or not. Walk around Thayer, Wickenden and downtown Prov. Check out some of the stuff that you won’t see on the tour like The Watson Institute, the Friedman Study Center (in the SciLi), the new Science Study Center (also in the SciLi), the new Joukowksy Institute (archeology department), the John Carter Brown Library and maybe the RISD museum (which is both gorgeous and cheap to get admission into). Get coffee at Blue State. Get cookies at the Meeting Street Cafe. Have Indian food at Kabob and Curry and say hello to the owner, Sanjiv.
