I'm visiting D.C. for the first time next week and will be checking out American University, George Washington, and the University of Maryland College Park (so far..). I'll be there for 5 and a half days so plenty of time to get a feel of the city, et al. Any suggestions of what to visit/see, etc.?

Also, what can I expect with the visit to GWU?

its in the middle of the city. literally. there isn't much in the way of a campus, but its a pretty cool atmosphere. you should go see the monuments, they're like 5 blocks from campus. and the white house is about 4 in another direction. and you could go to georgetown i guess. there are smithsonians everywhere you could go to, but since its a college visit i would advise not spending hours in museums lol.

Well, I have 5 days, which is more than enough time to see the campuses. Since I'm applying to so many schools in the D.C. area, I want to get a feel for the city itself (restaurants, sites, et al) to get a better idea of whether or not I would enjoy living there.

Well, make sure you pack for mid-forties to mid-fifties during the day with lots of wind because the weather is starting to turn a little chilly. For me anyway :) If you come to GWU you should make sure to check out all the types of classrooms you might be in. I recommend stopping in at the Elliot School for newer classrooms and then maybe looking at Philips Hall for older and smaller classrooms. You should absolutely look at all the floors at the Lerner Health and Wellness center which is awesome. I go there everyday. If you can try to check out the Foggy Bottom farmer's market which takes place by the medical school every week. Get on the Foggy Bottom metro and try to use that and get a feel for it.

I'm not sure what kind of food you like but there are plenty of little restaurants all around GW to check out. Thai Place is pretty good for, of course, Thai food. Can't go wrong with a bowl of chili or a milkshake at Johnny Rockets, there is a very nice upscale seafood restaurant on I street called Kinkead's. The best thing to do with GW is try to spend a little time over a few days exploring. Only then will you really get a feel for the "campus."

walt -- try to visit the Mt. Vernon campus too. That's one thing I really wished we had done when we did that trip last June (we visited the exact same schools you are visiting, in fact!).
