Visiting KP

Cover your eyes Jamz!!!! Go Cubbies FOREVER!

earmuffs!!!

ahah, mmm, old school joke.

Taffy - hows the application coming? The plebes have their first liberty today. Jamz & friends have gone into the city for pizza. Hope they catch the right subway then train then bus back..... 3 modes of transportation can be a bit confusing. Guess they'll figure it out. Jamz better get good at it since he's all about logistics huh.

Maybe all the landmarks get too confusing? Just give them latitude and longitude for the train and bus stations. ;)

HA! HA! Might have to. Hey! Jamz was just up in the Empire state building a few minutes ago. He is loving liberty. Funny how I wanted to say, "Call when you get home". but I so stopped myself. Man, I'm good!

as far as the application...

i started an application for an AFROTC scholarship a month or two ago. about a month ago i got the DoDMERB letter saying that ill need to schedule an appointment. before that i kinda realized that even if i did get an afrotc scholarship i probably wouldnt take it, because as soon as you grab the money you're committed. so i figured i would just give up on the afrotc scholarship thing. i got a letter today that said i have pretty much a week to get the dodmerb complete or they will cancel it. I think this dodmerb is what will be used for afrotc AND for the service academies, so now im in a rush to get this thing scheduled so i dont get put on their shiit list.

Taffy....

it's true that if you accept an ROTC scholarship you are out of the running for another ROTC one; however, you may still accept an appointment to one of the US service academies without any problems from ROTC.

Taffy...

oops, forgot to tell you that you are right.... DODMERB is used by all the academies and all branches of ROTC...good luck

yeah but

i am 99% sure i would not take the 4 year scholarship

i wouldnt wanna take it from somebody who would

its a pain in the ass to go through the rotc admissions process just like KP and CGA

Taffy - I meant to respond to your post earlier and got sidetracked. I really wish you would reconsider applying for an ROTC scholarship in addition to your applications to the Academies. As painful as it might be to your lower regions, I can't stress enough the importance of having a back-up plan. I know it seems a little sheepish to apply for & get a scholarship that you wouldn't use if you got into an Academy. My son felt the same way. However, its the way the game is played. Ya gotta get all of your options offered to you so that you will have something to fall back on should things not work out. We've seen too many times on this forum that sometimes things don't work out. Its a tough road to follow and being prepared can only help you. Get that DODMERB done! Don't make me worry about you!

if things dont work out, i will be doing AFROTC, without a scholarship/commitment.

OkeeDoKee Taffy. Sounds like you have a plan and have thought it out. I was just checkin'. Just ignore me. I'm a Mom with no kid to mom over.... Just a poor wee pitiful lonely old thing with nobody....Sigh...Its ok, truly. Wanna come over for some brownies? I have milk.

Hey, I take it you want fly? When you go to KP for your visit, be sure to let them know if that is the case. They will pair you with someone with like interests and you'll learn more. I understand that KP turns out a lot of pilots. ;)

Yes JM but I believe they are HARBOR pilots...jk

Jamz- your mom has kept us all posted on all your adventures- so its nice to see you on here! Can't wait for you to keep us all straight on what it's "really" like!

Harbor Pilots.....
Best sailing job in the maritime industry bar none. Home every night and get paid loads of cash, best of both worlds. Well unless you don't want to be home for some reason..

tell me more about harbor pilots :) do people become them out of kp? do you typically need sea experience to become one? are they tugboat operators? etc

KP will have to answer the job description part but I would say its a safe bet that you do need sea experience to become one... ;) And I think you'll be surprised at the job opportunities the kids have coming out of this Academy. I know I was floored! Anyhow, no kidding you guys, I'd read one of those college studies saying that KP was the place to go if you want to fly. I recently met a Navy pilot in Charleston who is KP Alumni and he said much of the same. I'm such a newb and the more I find out about this Academy, the more I say WOW. Jamz wants to do it all except fly.. He says, "Somebody's gotta drive the boat". I doubt we hear from him any time soon. He's busting hump on tests. The others have been really quiet too. Busy times. I consider that a good thing. Study people!

KP - going out to sea for months on end might look pretty good if you have another half at home waiting on you with a burnt meatloaf on a regular basis.

HP really is a good job for those that enjoy the sea.
A pilot is engaged by ocean going vessels, including Navy vessels, to guide the ship into port. They typically meet the ship somewhere about the outer markers and take command of the vessel.
It is a VERY well-paid job. Minimum low six figures.

I can't really comment on exact experience requirements, but I doubt a KP graduate would fall into this type of job. The pilots I have known were typically very experienced ocean-going vessel commanders before landing this job. It is one of those jobs that is coveted by many; in the port context, it would be akin to a crane operator or a harbor master. Relatively stable hours and high pay.

Pilots are most definitely not tugboat operators; they ride a tugboat out to the ship as it is coming in. [Or back in as the ship is leaving.]

Well done Bill! I would like to add that the companies who come to KP to recruit the Midshipmen are Exxon, Chevron, BP, all the cruise lines (wonder if mine could get me a suite for a month on Disney cruises. That little island is sweet!), ferry & tow lines, & I could go on & on. Taffy, on the USMMA parent's website, there is a section that tells of the opportunities. Check it out to see what and where you can go coming out of KP.

I could not find it here: http://www.usmma.edu/parents/ cruise liners sound cool

it seems like to be an air force or navy pilot out of KP you have to do rotc. rotc selection for AF pilots relies heavily on GPA, which would put san jose state at an advantage over KP.
