Visiting MBA/Grad: Duke vs. Stern vs. Kellogg vs. Booth vs. Yale

Hi there,

I am attending a masters degree in management this fall and our institution allows an exchange term at one of the following institutions:

-Duke (Fuqua)
-NYU Stern
-Kellogg
-Chicago Booth
-Yale SOM

Which one would you personally choose and why?
As far as I am concerned I am tending to Duke because its a very young and dynamic business school and likely to climb further in rankings. Regarding rankings: when comparing the schools in different tables (FT, USNews, etc.) its hard to see which one is really better. Is there actually a huge difference?
What are the job prospects in Consultancy and IB (haven't decided yet since another internship is coming up)

thanks a lot for your help!

greetings

where do you go now?

Duke would be one of the last schools I’d choose on that list for what its worth. If consulting is your top choice, I’d choose Kellogg then Chicago. If it’s IB, Chicago then either Yale or NYU.

I think it really depends on which field you want to get into. I agree with the_prestige for the most part, but there’re a couple things I wanted to point out. Duke has a good marketing program, better than the rest in the list, with the obvious exception of Kellogg. Also, Yale SOM is fairly new - even newer than Fuqua - so I’m inclined to not put them that high, though I’m sure others will disagree with me.

Of all the reasons to choose which school to attend for one term when away from your program, the estimate of which school was most “likely to climb further in rankings” (however you determine that), seems like a really bad rationale to me. Are you really that indifferent about the different schools, that that’s your biggest concern when it’s not even the school your degree will be through? I think I would agree with the others that Duke would be my last choice of the five and personally think the Duke Fuqua program is the most on the decline of the five schools. I would have said Fuqua was on the verge of the top 10 at the beginning of the decade and would now say that NYU and Yale (and Cal/Berkeley) seem to have surpassed it.

Here’s a possible reason Duke has been on the decline: 34 students were suspected of cheating in 2007.

thanks a lot for all of your replies!

i will be studying at LSE, which will do enough for the cv in europe. ok i didn’t know that fuqua is actually declining in league tables. i think european recruiters are not that desparate about the school we went to, since they usually do not have exclusive target schools.
the goal is to visit some finance classes and a couple of specialist management classes during the exchange term. what maybe could favor duke is the fact that the school has probably the most exchange student since the emphasis of their programs is very international. from a former exchange in the us i know that the exchange experience and the concacts you make is much more better in a “rural” or campus-style school. in a city like chicago or NY you are not likely to get in touch that closely.
however, i think i might also consider uchicago or kellogg since they seem somewhat superior to the others in terms of job-market acceptance.

do you agree with that?

thanks and have a nice weekend

Edit:
-For instance: in the USNews “International” ranking Duke seems to be the best of all. this could be important since i am studying international business!? http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-business-schools/international-business</a>
-And in “management” Duke is second best after kellogg of all five: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-business-schools/management</a>
-in marketing duke’s second: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-business-schools/marketing</a></p>

so whats so bad about duke then?
