i just found out yesterday that mcgill admitted me (woohoo!), so now i need to visit the campus. does anyone know if they are having any sort of special open house or such thing coming up? also, when is mcgill's spring break or has it already passed? thanks.

are you american or foriegn foriegn, oh and major congrats

american... living in colorado

congratulations!!! that's awesome stuff. I told you that you had nothing to worry about ;)

McGill's spring break was last week (hence my absense from CC..haha). We have a four day weekend coming up over easter (friday, saturday, sunday, monday), however my guess is that you probably wouldn't want to travel that weekend?

here is McGill's page on visiting the campus :) http://www.mcgill.ca/visiting/
I don't think they have an open house..their big one was earlier this year, January, methinks. Though my memory is a bit hazy.

However if you do end up visiting during the school year, I'd be happy to show you around buildings, classes, residences, Montr

oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Finals start midway through April and everything is pretty much wrapped up by April 30th (that is when the lease expires on traditional residences)...so if you want to see the campus in a regular pattern, best visit before like April 17th.

when i visited mcgill last year, we walked up to the gates, and realized it was so cold we were about to die, well not me, but one kid forgot a warm jacket, so we sorta went to go to a hook a bar, i think it was all i needed to know

yeah, visiting now, bring warm clothes. It snowed like crazy today...not fun.

Ian, did you go to Peel Pub? That's a traditional McGill student hangout. Gerts, on campus, is another place where it can be good, but it's a Thursday night tradition. Caf

hooka* i need 10 characters in adition to hooka

in addition, what program did you apply and what were your states, si vous pleit, i think it may be plait, but i can pronounce it, so what ever, i also cant figure how to do the accents

ah, bless the irish, honestly, i don know, i may have, i cant remember the weekend that much, so im not sure what exactly, but i might have

it's si vous plait :) I kinda think there's an accent attached somewhere in that too..but I can't remember where. I think it's a circumflex over either the a or the i.

i kind of remember the o thing, but i have no idea, blast the french

you know, it's usually not a good sign when you can't remember where you went drinking :p

lol, i know, but probably a sign it was a good night

LOL, probably true enough ;)

I predict you'll like McGill frosh.

my lord i pray i get in, auch, grapeftrui, ich habe vergelessen, da

pamplemousse, if you've never been to Montreal, one thing that isn't obvious - if you walk down the hill from McGill it looks like normal city blocks (well, cleaner and safer than typical US cities ;-) ), but if you go inside the store fronts, you'll find the entire city block of stores and restaurants, etc joined inside like a mall, sheltered from the weather. It's a whole world in there (I think it's called the underground?). Nice place for big shoppers. ;-)

thanks everyone for the responses. i'm actually thinking about coming the week of march 21st and flying home on fri or sat. i'm coming with my mom, though--so no pub visiting for me :(
my stats:
GPA: 3.7 UW/4.5 W
SAT: 1360 (750 V, 610 M)
Sat II: 730 writing, 710 french, 710 literature
most rigorous courseload/ib diploma

damn. good stats.
my writing score was low...
lower actually than their requirements, but i didnt have an american education. went to a canadian boarding school. they said that they'd take everyting into account and that the requirements are for first year students. ive got an A in my compositon course last semester and im sure that is worth something.

mm.. mcgill is definitely my top choice. their joint honors in economics and finance as well as the environment (city) both really appeal to me.

Congrats though! :D

My daughter is a sophomore at McGill. She loves it. There is no spring break - they just had a one-week "reading period" - of course my daughter came home and didn't read anything. It's a very, very big school and very competitive. There is NO grade inflation at McGill - so be serious about your studies from Day One - and if you feel you need help in a course, get it right away, don't wait. We live in NJ - my daughter was used to snow and cold weather but it does get a little colder in Montreal than NJ -buy good boots and a good coat and good gloves and a good hat!

yep, "reading week"...as if they actually expected us to study ;)

hat, mitts, scarf, jacket are necessities here in winter. I hate hats and find myself wearing them a lot. Such is life.

As for grade inflation, percent grades are a lower, however the distribution of As, Bs, Cs, etc is about the same, because here the grading is something like
85% and up = A
80% to 85% = A-
75% to 80% = B+
70% to 75% = B
65% to 70% = B-
etc etc.

however it is by no means easy to get As...not too many people get assignments graded in the 90s. I got A- in french and chemistry, and Bs in physics and calculus last semester, and I was very happy.

And for pamplemousse, there are TONS of fun things to do in montreal without drinking or pubcrawling. Take your mum to the biodome, go to Vieux montreal, visit cafes on rue saint-denis, shop in the mall, wrap up warm and go walk around Marc du Mont-Royal, and sightsee at all the gloriously beautiful cathedrals and churches around here. There's a lot to do. and plenty enogh time for the "finer things" during frosh and weekends ;)
