Visiting Ohio State- things to see and do

There are probably some old threads on this topic - but I’ll start a fresh one. My D will be visiting the OSU campus all day on Presidents Day ( (Monday). We will have Saturday night and all day Sunday to explore Columbus and surrounding area. What are the top 5 things to see and do Saturday night/Sunday? Any lunch or dinner suggestions for downtown Columbus?

bump… any response is appreciated.

The subway on Olentangy was pretty dope. I would recommend it, as it tasted much like subway should taste.

Maybe you could take in a movie at the Gateway on Saturday night? I’m sure at some point in your D’s OSU career, she will do that with friends so it would be fun to have been there yourself. COSI is a science museum that is in Downtown Columbus. North Market (they have a website)-not sure if they are open on sunday. There are a couple of malls not far from campus-Easton Town Center (this one is better) and Polaris Fashion Place. There may be suggestions on the Experience Columbus website (http://www.experiencecolumbus.com/</a>). Franklin Park Conseratory, Columbus Zoo (Brrrrrr…), there are a lot of thrift shops and second hand shops in Clintonville (go north of campus on high street).

My S and I usually eat at Eddie George’s grill. But we need to expand our horizons and try new places too. He likes going places that don’t take the BuckId when I’m around because I pay. I do want to try Jack and Benny’s for breakfast but want to wait until it warms up. They may have a line. Buckeye Donuts is awesome but you really will have to wait outside for that.

I would spend a portion of your time just getting familiar with High Street right across from campus and beyond. It will give you some comfort when she goes to OSU knowing what she is talking about and that you have been there before. Maybe take a drive through the off campus housing areas. There are some really pretty areas and at some point she will probably live off campus or know someone who does.

Hopefully someone else can chime in and give you some ideas too. Have fun on the visit. Let us know what you ended up doing!!

German Village http://www.gvbusinesscommunity.com/</a></p>

Also, go to the Bookloft, which is in German Village http://www.bookloft.com/</a></p>

As far as restaurants–two that we like to go to are The Cap City Diner at 1299 Olentangy River Road, and Champps at 1827 Olentangy River Road–a good variety of foods–salads, burgers etc. A fun place to go to is The North Market–59 Spruce Street–on the corner of Park and Spruce, one block off High Street, across from the Convention Center. They have lots of individual shops–pizza, crepes, BBQ, Jeni’s ice cream, bakeries, etc–with places set-up to eat–it’s fun. That part of High Street–the Short North–has lots of nice shops.

German Village.off of High Street is a very interesting neighborhood to drive around–old brick roads, cute stores, bakeries, restaurants, etc. I really like going to The Book Loft at 631 Third street–a great place to poke around. Lindy’s is a nice restaurant there that we enjoy. Thurmans Cafe and Schmidt’s Fudge House have both been featured on Food Network

If you are on campus–go to the main library, and go to the reading room on the 11th floor where you get great views of the campus. Stop at the desk on the first floor and get a guide to all of the language tiles. Check out the following link:

There is also the Cartoon Library and Museum on campus, if you are interested in that:

If you like shopping, I agree that Easton Mall is a good choice.

If you like Japanese food, this is the place to go, it is fabulous:
Akaihana Restaurant
1173 Old Henderson Rd, Columbus, OH 43220-3607

Also, there is a large Asian grocery store in the same shopping center,
it is wonderful. And a Japanese bakery next door, to die for baked goods.
