Visiting San Luis Obispo

Wow. I’m sold. Hopefully they have some decent rates. Thanks.

I checked the online rates (Lowest rates, AAA, AARP, etc.) Then I also called to verify those were the lowest. There is no booking fee for online. Just the usual 24 hour cancellation. Naturally, the rates will be less at different times of the year. I find that the full cooked-to-order breakfast is *more *than worth it. As is the wine and beer reception the evening before. If you had to pay for all of that separately, you would definitely be spending a lot. The warm, fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies up at the desk are a nice treat, too.

Here is an example of our rates:

August–AARP rate-- $123 King bedroom suite/living room with sectional sofabed.
two TVs. microwave, frig, wetbar. Very nice

This past Thurs. night–AAA rate—$132 Two double bed suite/living room with sectional sofabed and everything else as above. Small balcony.

And, as I said, it included the complimentary perks I mentioned above. I have never seen a cleaner hotel, either! Beautiful lobby. I sound like I work there, but honestly I don’t! :)

Also, the guy who drove us downtown in the little PT Cruiser hotel shuttle is such a nice guy. Not only is he a trivia buff (he knows a little about everything!), he also is the hotel’s computer-guru. He fixed my iPod Touch so the WiFi worked back in August. Their shuttle runs until 9:30 PM, but you can still walk back from downtown, as we did both times. It’s also not far from campus. Just a block away from Grand Ave.

2Leashes, I’m glad your trip was successful. I am really hoping my son loves it. We booked at the Quality Suites. It was $149 a night (with the AAA discount) because it will be Spring Break time. I still think it is a good deal, in light of the free breakfast and happy hour. We booked 2 rooms because my sons are 16 and 18 we wanted to make a mini vacation out of it. I’m really looking forward to it. We be there Wed and Thursday, so we will be there for Farmer’s Market. Thanks again everyone for all of your suggestions and comments.

Wow, two suites! Did you book a King suite for yourself and a Double bed suite for them? They won’t have to sleep on the sofa bed. Lucky guys! What I like about the rooms, is if you ***didn’t ***have two separate suites, is that you can at least make it private because they have a pocket door that slides closed between the LR and bedroom. It’s nice if people want to watch two different tv programs, too. In your case, with two suites, you’ll each have your own bathroom. This time we stayed up closer to the front where the action is, and faced the pool. We were right over the breakfast cafe and and quick walk to the lobby. The first time we were way in back which is very quiet, but a bit too far from the action.

We took the PT Cruiser shuttle down to Farmer’s Market about 7 PM after happy hour. I *think *the driver is named Steve. Be sure and have your boys look for the warm chocolate chip cookies up at the desk. ;)

My husband was joking and said, “If she ends up going, you know we’ll be giving the hotel a lot of business because we’ll be visiting her every weekend”. LOL! Surrrrre, Dad! :)

Yes, we are spluging on two rooms, one with a king and one with the 2 doubles. My sons are both very tall and don’t fit well on a sofa bed. Also, I want it to be nice since
this will be our family Spring break mini vacation. I will be sure to have the boys scout out the chocolate chip cookies. Thanks for the hot tip.

Have a wonderful mini vacation! Yeah, as our kids older and taller they definitely need more stretching room! Smart move! :)

Quality Suites also has 2 computers in the lobby with a printer, very convenient for checking e-mail if you don’t bring a laptop(there is wifi in the rooms) or printing your boarding pass if you are flying. We always stay there when visiting our son who is a Cal Poly student, unless I rent a condo in Avila Beach. The free breakfast is excellent, as others have mentioned.

**Now they have three. I spent some time on all of them when we were there both times. Very convenient like you mentioned. I love the atmosphere in the lobby, as well. Very open and light and beautifully decorated. And, I often ended up chatting with one or more of the hotel personnel.**

@tlam…do you rent one of the newly built condos in Avila? friends of ours from OC used to rent a beachfront house in Cayucos when they visited their son. It was a mini vacation for them. Their son would bring some friends and stay with them. If we didn’t live in SLO I would do the same.

The beachfront house sounds great. I think we will stick with the Quality Suites for now, since we really want to focus on getting a feel for Cal Poly SLO. However, if he ends up going there, we might rent a beach house in the future. How far is Cayucos from the campus?

slodad, yes one of the newer ones with a San Miguel St. address - it was really nice, spacious. Not right on the water, but only 1/2 block off. Son and a couple friends came and stayed with us, just like you said your OC friends did. The kids really enjoyed getting away from dorm living for a couple days. I rented through Beach Bum holiday rentals - their office is in Pismo Beach.

Calmom, you are right, stay in town at Quality Suites to get the best feel for Cal Poly this time. Do the beach house next year if your son goes there!

thanks tlam…we’ve actually looked into buying one of those condos as a second home/vacation rental. were you happy with the unit and beach bum? avila has the best weather of all the local beaches…rarely gets socked in like all the others.

To CalMom05:

Cayucos is close to 19 miles from SLO. Pleasant drive through Morro Bay along Highway 1. I have Swiss-Italian relatives who have a wonderful working ranch in the hills 8 miles up from the coast of Cayucos. In the family since the 1800s. Some of the family also lived in SLO, as well as Cambria, so they made the drive back and forth frequently. Lots of Cal Poly history with these farmers, so it’s kind of special that my daughter got in (even though she’s never met any of the Tognazzinis) The one time I had visited Cal Poly prior to our recent visits was in 1988 and we stayed at the ranch in Cayucos. Very easy drive. I may have to look them up again! ;)

@2leashes…your family is the Tognazzinis? The same that owns the restaurant in Morro Bay? Old family name here in town. They must be friends with the Hearst family having a ranch close by their property.

oops misread your post…I thought the ranch was north of Cambria.

slodad…yes, happy with the condo and happy with Beach Bum. They seem well run. Only downside was I had to go to their office in Pismo to get the key, which was a little out of the way, but not bad. I like Avila better than Pismo, have stayed in both places. Avila is small, but seems much nicer to me.
