Visiting Stony Brook

I'm out of state, and will be flying up to visit next week. Anything in particular to see?
Also, will I see the dorms on the campus tour?
(I know, sort of a vague question, but it'll be my first time in NY)

And what are the good hotels near SB?

And I'm sure this pegs me as a stupid out of state kid, but how does the train system work? How do I get from Ronkonkoma to Stony Brook?

First, the tour. Yes, it includes the residence halls, as well as all the major student spaces on campus. If you have specific questions about anything else you're looking to see, PM me and I'll let you know.

As far as hotels, the closest would be the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook. The link is on my site, which you can reach through my profile page. (Or you can go to the main Holiday Inn site.) The Stony Brook rate is either $99 or $129, I don't remember which. (I think it went up this year.) They have a shuttle to campus.

Ronkonkoma to Stony Brook isn't a direct line; you'd actually have to go west all the way to Hicksville, then come all the way back out to Stony Brook. It'd take way too long; much easier to drive, or take a cab, or something like that. The LIRR map is here (http://www.mta.info/lirr/html/lirrmap.htm) -- it's really designed for transit in and out of NYC, not north-south travel on LI.

You could take a bus (www.sct-bus.org); depending on where you are in Ronkonkoma, you could take one of the lines to the Smith Haven Mall, then take the S69 to campus. Might be a little tedious, and I haven't taken the bus so I don't know about how often they run, but it's an option.

If you have specific questions about anything, PM me. Let me know when you're coming and we'll set you up.

sbuadmissions-
Barrelofmonkeys brings up a good point. SBU should think about having an airport shuttle. Many other colleges provide this service to their students. If you want to attract out-of-state students you should make it easy for them to get to your college. When my D looked at colleges this was a major selling point for me.

Three Village Inn at Stonybrook

http://www.threevillageinn.com/

Stonybrook actually has a quaint little village......

Rent a car and go to Port Jefferson, Orient Point, do a little wine tasting and goto the vineyards, Greenport, Montauk (if you are really ambitious).

Thanks. I think I'm going to try NYC. I'm much more of a city girl, and I think I'll try that the next day. Any must-sees there, besides the obvious?

And Chris- some other great people in the admissions office are helping with class visits and stuff, but thanks.

The shuttle is actually something we'll probably start working on next year; we have a few students organizing an out-of-state students club, to help with things like coordinating transportation and sharing summer storage space. The LIRR can get you to campus from JFK easily, but not from Islip, which is the closest airport. So hopefully that'll be easier next year!

BoM, I wasn't sure if you'd heard about the class visit program... glad you're doing that. NYC's a good time; there's nothing you can't find there.

Check with the Holiday Inn Stony Brook... I'd bet they can pick you up from Islip, if that's where you're flying in.
