As we all know, the 18th is the "Open house" day for Cal, the day admittants will fly by plane to visit the campus.

I told my parents that the 18th isn't available for me, I have a school trip on that day.
They decided that the best days to go is Thursday of this week, my spring break. These days are April 9-11.
My dad is highly persistent that Cal will not let you tour the campus on any day other than Open house. He insists I call the administration and ask them if this is OK, since I have a cousin who currently attends and can take us on a tour.
Could any of you, with experience, (as I know most of you do!) tell me is it OKAY to take a look around the campus, on these days? And what are the advantages/disadvantages of touring the campus on these days (as compared to "Open House" day)?

& What's there to do?

ON a side note, I e-mailed the Berkeley counselors that I dropped my sport (swim), because of health reasons. They didn't respond yet and it's been a long time, almost a week. Is this going to affect my chances? I put "personal and health" reasons as the problem. Please, somebody, please tell me this won't affect my chances! (spring admit 2010)

I don't think a class trip holds more significance than a proper introduction of Cal's campus, traditions, and features, all of which you will surround yourself with for the next, possibly most important, four years of your life. But if you think that the trip would be as beneficial for you as Cal day will be, then I suggest you go to the trip instead.

I am attending Cal Day and I can't wait for all the activities, presentations, extended tours, etc. I wish you could join us.

But to answer your question, I have gone to Cal just by myself (not on one of their admit days), and I have toured it with already attending students. It's not very hard. I know that Stanford has a special department organized for these types of occasions, with student volunteers who would be happy to give you a tour of the campus regardless of any predestined schedule.

Besides, what can they possibly do? The worst possible situation will be you being told to leave campus, which then, you can just go to the other end of the school. Cal is a huge campus, with thousands and thousands of other students. You'll blend right in.

As a first year student, I am by no means an expert in this subject, but I doubt that attending Cal's open house is going to be the deciding factor for you. And honestly, you'll probably get a more accurate feel for what campus life is like if you go on just a regular old school day (I didn't go to Cal day last year so I can't say exactly what happens). So my advice would be if you really want to go on your school trip, go. That's an opportunity you'll never have again.

Oh and as far as dropping your sport, unless you got into Cal for swimming, I doubt they'll rescind you. And don't worry about the lack of response. Cal is huge; I wouldn't be surprised if you never heard back from them.

First, regarding sports, I really really doubt you'll get rescinded. The only times I've ever heard of someone getting rescinded (from any college) is pretty much really bad grades.

Second, your dad has a lot to learn about Cal. It's virtually impossible to get kicked out of campus unless you punch someone. The fact is there is plenty of hobos, people that are high, and etc. on campus. This should make a point: unless a homeless person disturbs a class, it's highly unlikely he will be asked to leave a lecture hall. period. Now, it certainly wouldn't hurt to visit on Open House day, but any day of the school year (berkeley's school year) will give you a great feel of the university.

They have campus tours every day of the week, you just need to sign up on the website beforehand.

Verified: (from e-mail sent to me by the College of engineering) dropping sport will not affect chances of admission!

Thanks for the tips, everyone

Campus tours go on all the time. In fact, I've been dodging them everyday at school for over a week now. I saw three at the same time today... and it was raining.
