Regents OHP Questions [Help from current students?]

Hi everyone,

The RCSA OHP webpage is a bit vague on a few issues and so I hope some of you (possibly current students?) could help answer a few questions! :)

Okay so on the April 11th date, the day before Cal Day, we arrive and meet our hosts and so forth. But on Saturday, April 12th, the only thing mentioned is that we are left to roam around campus. Do at least some of the hosts (scholars) escort us around the school to see lectures, events, museums etc. that are going to be open on Cal Day? Or are we just left to ourselves to find our way around the huge campus?

Also, we have to bring with us a sleeping bag, clothes and so forth. Because the next day is Cal Day, are we just gonna be dragging our stuff around with us? It seems sort of inconvenient.. am I missing something? :p

Thanks in advance. I would really appreciate your help!

I suggest you also send an email to them asking the same questions. They may be able to provide a far more satisfactory answer based on the entire program than a couple based on individual experiences.

Generally events are scheduled on the Friday, and Saturday your parents walk around with you; though it depends on your host too as their obligation ends on Cal Day. A lot happens on Cal Day so it's best you drag your parents along and take a look at everything interesting (check out the museums that are generally closed to the public for sure!).

I've been to Cal Day, and it's like a huge fair open to the public. There are booths from each department, displays, labs, speakers, performances, athletics, food, music, etc. All the museums are open for free. There are plenty of faculty around to talk to, and there are tours all day. I'm sure you'll have a great time just walking around without an escort.

I went to OHP yesterday and for the interview, we were allowed to leave our stuff in the international house.

Or if you have a cool host, you can ask to see if they'll be in their dorm around the time you're leaving. Just leave the stuff in his/her room and give them a call when you want to go up to grab your stuff and leave. (It's what I did, I stayed till about five and my host said he'd be in his room at that time)

I see. thanks! :)

Also do they take us to breakfast before leaving us to roam around?

According to the site, we're on our own for breakfast (people who've done it, confirm?)

When are people going up? I'll be there 3/11-3/12.

yeah I'm wondering how many people usually go to each of these :p ?

Some of the time, hosts will take care of or at least help guests to breakfast but they're not obligated. Also, I-house has a continental breakfast in the morning for the potential scholars, I think.

Also, I think about 15 people per night go to the ones in the middle of the week but the Cal Day OHP is huge--closer to 100.

Does anyone know how long a campus tour is?

I signed up to host a student for OHP and generally, I am only officially responsible for letting the student to sleep in my room and maybe go to some pizza place during the night. Basically... the students are supposed to walk around the campus during the Cal Day by themselves. There are lots of events prepared for the incoming students on Cal Day so I think there shouldn't be a problem. You just need to check out the night before about which events you want to attend and mark the location and time. I think most of the host are pretty busy so they probably won't be your guide for the whole day on Cal Day. I myself need to work in the lab and also study for the incoming midterms...

Regard breakfast... I guess I will just bring my student to Noah's.

mmk, I'm not a regents scholar or anything, just curious:

What is OHP, and does everyone do it one Cal Day, or are there several days you can go? Is it required?

OHP: Overnight Host Program (?) for Regents/Chancellors Candidates. Dates are this past week, 3/11,3/12,3/13, and Cal Day (there may be a few others). It's not required.

I'm kind of wondering: can you go to it twice?
