I live in Virginia, and my family is trying to visit the University of Michigan on March 8th.
We will be staying for 1 night on Sunday to visit the university. Here is our brief plan summary: airplane(to Detroit metro airport) ===> michigan flyer or taxi ==> four points sheraton hotel ==> the union. But the problem is if we stay at the hotel, we have to walk 2.6miles especially in the morning! (my mom has some health problems) So, any suggestions to get to the union from the hotel? or is there any better way to visit the university?

lol I dont really consider sheraton walkable distance away, unless you want to spend more than half an hour. Just get a cab. Cabs are cheap in ann arbor (compared to other places of course).

The cheapest/easiest thing to do is rent a car at the airport…I usually get the best deals naming my own price on Priceline (bid at least half the price they want to charge). It’s very simple to drive from the airport to U Mich. Otherwise, use the Michigan Flyer instead of a taxi if you don’t want to rent a car…very easy and comfortable. And definitely take a Blue Cab from the hotel to the campus (about $10)…not walkable! You may also want to check prices on the hotels adjacent to the Sheraton (Courtyard, Fairfield, etc.) to see if they are cheaper.

Another idea, I’ve never done it and I don’t know if anyone here has, but you can actually stay at the Michigan League on campus [Inn at the League | University Unions | University of Michigan](Inn at the Michigan League - University Unions). Since you have such a short time for a visit, that option may give you the most time on campus.

Hey guys, the Four Points Sheraton has a free shuttle to the Union, or wherever else you want to go. They also have a super cheap rate if you told them it’s for a school visit and an awesome FREE breakfast buffet.
So, YCM, you’re completely covered! Enjoy your time and make sure you try to get tickets to see some of the performances while you’re on campus!

BTW – renting a car at the airport may be cheap, but AA, although small, is kind of frustrating in terms of driving/navigating/parking etc. It’s laid out in what I call the typical french fur-trader grid, so everything is circular or dog-legged and not true N,W,S,E. So I would actually argue that it is easier to get around campus on foot, between campuses by UMich bus (free), and to the Sheraton by shuttle, they’ll give you a card to call to come pick you up when you’re ready for them (free). The league hotel seems fine and is convenient, but if you’re looking to conserve cash it’s about twice the special rate the Sheraton offers.

I read your post wrong…

If the shuttle doesn’t take you back from the union you should hopefully see AATA busses (they’re white) on N. University across the street from the diag (make sure you are across the street from the diag), get a #2 going downtown, then get off at Blake Transit Center, and get on the #7 (you might have to wait). The 7 should take you pretty close to your hotel (ask the bus driver what stop you should get off at, they can help you). You can also walk from campus to Blake Transit Center (walking fast it’s a 12 or 13 minute walk from the far side of the diag).

Check theride.org

we rented a car from the airport and it worked fairly well. It’s a straight shot on south state street to the campus and the town of AA

^Is it easy to park around the campus?

Maynard parking structure is the best one. ($0.90/hr) and it’s just 2-3 minutes walk from central campus.

on the admission package mailed to me, it listed the possible dates to visit, and the last one was in March. Is is possible to visit after this date? If so, what will be different and what wont i be able to see/do?

btw, i cant visit until early/mid april because i live in California, and i applied to a lot of schools in the east. so, im going to visit them all in one round, and the admission decisions for private schools dont come out will late march/ early april

We are also from CA and visited last year during part of our April Spring break. We’re going back to campus day on the 28th of March. I think there are no more campus dates after that is because Michigan has early finals(?). I sure you can still catch a tour when you go, however, unless they are right in the middle of finals.

kmccrindle: Thank you so much for contributing to CC!! Your first hand experience and “maturity” are such a valuable asset to us all!!!

Thanks, littlefalls. It seems such a waste to not once you’ve gone through it all. I know cc posters helped our family enormously last year, so I hope we can pay it forward.
Cheers,
