visiting tomorrow maybe raining

We are looking forward to visiting PSU tomorrow and checking out the engineering school. any suggestions of anything to see on campus that might not be on the general tour. It might be raining, but we will have our umbrellas.

You MUST visit the creamery! The ice cream is delicious! :)

Leave time to explore the actual town of State College. It is the quintessential college town, with lots of shops and so many options for lunch or dinner.

Why not visit on a Friday ? You will see the real PSU.

Some things to do:
Relax in front of Old Main.
Go to the creamery. (personally, i don’t find any difference between creamery ice-cream and any other ice-cream)
Go inside Hammond Building. (I guess that’s in the tour)
Explore the town. There are some bars and more bars.

^^what is that supposed to mean?

Anyway, we take our visitors to the Palmer Art Museum, the Pasquerilla center ( spiritual center across from Pattee)’ the Centre Co visitors center (out by the stadium, there’s a nifty map on the floor)’, the All sports Museum at the stadium itself, the Arboretum if it’s nice. You can eat at The Corner Room or The Diner and we won’t think you are just a tourist, or have a famous smoothie at Irving’s bagels. If you like used books, check out Webster’s below the street on Beaver, which is under Uncle Eli’s ( fantastic art supply store). Shops are too numerous to mention! Cheapest PSU shirts will be at the Family Clothesline outlet store on College, or pick something up at Rapid Transit on Allen St near the Corner Room. Corner of Beaver/Allen is Schlow library — bathrooms and comfy chairs!

Yes, please explain the comment about friday? I assume it is more negativity from him/her?
How long have you been on campus xtremepower? How many students do you know? How long have you attended PSU?

Finally, back to the post. I made some suggestion in another post about visiting. See those.

luvthej some previous posts from Xtreme may give a clue to his issues with Penn State

1/20/13 He has claimed that he was later accepted to Fall at UP.

1/20/13 This of course explains his lack of knowledge about the state

2/26/13 This was Xtreme’s response when asked why he recommended Pitt over PSU. He prefers Pitt but is attending PSU. Maybe he wasn’t accepted or couldn’t make the money work for Pitt but this comment makes it clear he doesn’t want to go to Penn State.

Yes if you have time, explore downtown and the surrounding areas. You’ll find that there’s everything you could possibly need in the SC area.

Also unless the tour is engineering specific, you probably won’t go in the Hammond building. The tour guides are students and they do these tours between class times (at least, thats what ours told us) so they try to do the tour of the whole campus in around an hour. Unfortunately you won’t be able to see or go to the lion shrine, they’re renovating it this summer. The HUB might also be a bit of an eyesore as thats undergoing its expansion project as well. But aside from those two things the campus is so beautiful you could honestly spend hours walking around and admiring it.

We were there for “spend a summer day” program today. great visit. not a blade of grass out of place and the squirrels are nice. The amount of spirit of everyone there is amazing. It was kind of a broad brush stroke of the campus due to limited time and a 3 1/2 hr car ride each way but we loved the vibe. The immensity of the campus is almost in conflict with the folksy feel of everyone there, if that makes any sense.
The Information Science and Technology Building is impressive, but I personally liked the old school feel of some of the older buildings. I did learn a couple things about admissions today…They do not super score but take you best test results from a single day. Also, they use whatever GPA is given from your high school, whether it is weighted or not. Overall positive visit and a school that my son will strongly consider if given the opportunity. Death by chocolate was the consensus favorite flavor.

I’m glad you enjoyed the visit. When we did the “official tour” and attended the information sessions, I was very impressed with the way everything was handled (and I’ve been on campus for 15 years) . Far superior to other well known Universities. Only knock was the tour guides knew little about the academic programs- the reason to attend the the college specific programs. But really, you can’t expect them to, right. This expectation might be too high of tour guides.
If he is seriously considering PSU, I recommend coming back for another visit and participating in college-specific activities and information sessions.

Just want to say that my son had the best four years ever at Penn State.

Apprehensive of the size at first he quickly became comfortable.

There are many very smart and focused students at PSU and some of the programs are top in the nation. Your son can get anywhere he wants to with a PSU education.

…and he can have a great time.

We did have a session with a Mechanical Engineering professor and a student ambassador who was wonderful. There is only so much that you get out of a PowerPoint Presentation without actually seeing the labs and the actual projects that the students are doing. My son will be getting his application in early since with a rolling admission perhaps we can get things wrapped up and move on the really big question which is how to pay for this endeavor. He’s got a 3.96 gpa and 1910 SAT with a 720 in math so I think he should get in to the Engineering school.

He should have no problem getting into the College of Engineering. His numbers are slightly higher than my son’s stats. And he starts are University Park in 2 weeks!

My son had stats similar to those and heard back in early November; I think that is about the earliest acceptances come out. (Someone might know better; it’s been a few years.)

I’m glad you met with a faculty member; many families don’t realize they are happy to do that, especially with a few days notice. Did you get a peek at any of the labs?
