Visiting West Point?

My neighbor/best guy friend just got appointed to west point, and I was just wondering what the visitor policies are like? We are from illinois, so any visit would probably warrant an multi-night stay somewhere. I'm assuming they don't let you stay on campus. Will I ever be allowed to stay in new york and drive up to spend the day with him? Is it normal for plebes to have any time to have visitors? I understand I would never visit during the summer. But maybe sometime during my winter break or during jan/feb? What are their breaks like? Any details would be helpful! I know very little about West point!

You will be able to drive up and spend the day. Better yet - take the train.
You won’t be able to stay overnight on post.
Plebes generally have walking privleges on the weekends after duties. Usually all day on Sunday and some Saturdays.

For leave they get Thanksgiving weekend, about two weeks at Christmas and a spring break. There are also some three days weekends which they may be eligible to take a pass.

You can’t stay in the cadet area but you can stay on post at the Hotel Thayer. It’s right inside Thayer Gate and is about a mile walk to the cadet area. Hotel is very nice but expensive. GEN MacArthur’s mother stayed there when he was a cadet.

Actually, Mrs. “Pinky” MacArthur stayed at the old West Point hotel that was located near Trophy Point. This allowed her to view Douglas’ room to see if his lights were on when they should be off and vice versa. From what I remember reading, she stayed there all four years. Can you say “helicopter mom”?

majmattmason, she did in fact stay all four years! I read that in Ike: An American Hero. MacArthur was an interesting character. :)
