I will be bringing my D to visit Lehigh. She is currently a junior. We will do an info session and tour. One of the things we did when we visited schools with my older daughter was to go out to dinner at a restaurant that kids from the university would go to for a break from meal plan food. We also eat lunch at one of the dining halls on campus. Both are great for people watching and seeing the food options...after all that's what you will have for 4 years.

Can anyone suggest a restaurant for dinner Sunday night that would be a place that students would go to? Not interested in fast food, but a local restaurant.

I can name a few great places around campus where you and your daughter can eat. Molly’s a great sports bar located a block from campus - they serve traditional sandwich/bar fare. It’s my favorite place to eat when my family visits. Sal’s is also close by and has excellent Italian food. The Goose is a deli a few blocks away - it’s mostly for take-out but there are plenty of places to sit and dine-in. All of these places are constantly frequented by Lehigh students.

I’ve also eaten at some more non-traditional places, as well. La Lupita (Mexican food) and Nawab (Indian buffet) are both in the South Side near Lehigh, and Mama Nina’s (Italian food) is up in the North Side over the river. Lehigh students don’t go to these places as often.

Let us all know where you ate and how it was!

I recommend Sal’s if you want to eat pretty much only with Lehigh Students - its Italian and a block from campus. Small, but good food. If you have time for a lunch thing - I would recomemnd the Goose - it is frequented pretty much by every Lehigh Student and teacher. Love to eat and watch the kids in line - awesome way to see the students. It is very casual however, you stand in line and order and there is seating on two floors, but its pretty much subs (out of this world subs, but subs nontheless).

For dinner though, I recommend going over the bridge to North Bethlehem - its not all students, but a fair amount - Brew Works, Mama Nina’s - lots of shops and eating venues.

Mike and mumof2boyz - Thanks for the restaurant suggestions, I will look into them! We were going to come up this Sunday and tour on Monday. It looks like the school will be reopening after the storm on Monday, so I am not sure if our plan will still work. Maybe it’s better to come another day?

I’m not on-campus at the moment since I’m doing a co-op, but I have been following what’s happening up at Lehigh. It looks like Lehigh has had power since Thursday, but they cancelled classes back on Monday for the entire week and actively encouraged students to go home.

I’m sure there are a good amount of students still on-campus right now. Libraries and other facilities on-campus are all open again, but there are lots of people up there still without power. There are probably a lot of trees still down around the area, as well.

If you can put it off, I recommend you do so, since we’re not exactly at our best right now. But Lehigh does have power and students should be returning the campus this weekend, so I don’t think your plans are totally ruined.

Thanks for responding. I called the admissions office this morning and she said that everything should be up and running and in full swing on Monday. She said that power is back on and they are just finishing clearing some trees, which is why the school isn’t reopening until Monday. I think we are going to stick with our plan. Right now the weather forecast shows a nice sunny day on Monday with no chance of rain! If we reschedule I don’t know when we would get a chance to visit until spring and my D is really anxious to visit the school.

Thanks again for all of your help and advice!

That’s also what I’ve been hearing, mdmomfromli. There were some really big trees knocked down in the hurricane. It’s pretty remarkable that Lehigh is able to pull itself together so quickly.

Should be a good day with plenty of students eager to go back to class. Enjoy!

Just wanted to post a quick follow up to our visit.

We arrived Sunday night, it was already dark, but D wanted to drive through the campus anyway. Very pretty even in the dark! Then we went and had dinner at Bethlehem Brew Works…very good dinner and were glad we had a chance to see that area of Bethlehem, it was better than I expected…D saw lots of shops that she would be very happy look at more in depth!

Monday we had the info session. The room was way too hot, but other than that, the presentation was good. Lots of good information, the presenter needs a little polishing of her public speaking skills (too many umms, you know, etc.) Then we had the tour. Great tour guide. Campus is very pretty, I would imagine you stay in great shape there, walking up and down the hill. Lots of school spirit and school pride. Different kids shouted “Come to Lehigh” at the tour group and we noticed at least 1 out of 2 kids wearing Lehigh sweatshirts, jackets, etc. That’s a big plus for D she really likes to see school pride.

For lunch we went to the Goose and then we hit the road. Lehigh is on the list to stay…as we do more visits we will see where it falls.

We will be visiting Lehigh in late March. The restaurant suggestions look great! Any hotel recommendations close to campus? My daughter is a junior. Any suggestions as to how to make the most of our visit? Thanks!

I second the Hotel Bethlehem, for its location near cute shops, restaurants, and historic Bethlehem. Parking is easy. It has a bar with live music occasionally and a nice Sunday brunch. Pricier is the Sayre Inn. Over off of Airport Rd (but only 10 minutes from campus) are all the chain hotels like Fairfield Inn, Comfort Inn, etc. These are right off Rt. 22 and close to Target and the mall so if you become a Lehigh parent, they are good hotels to know about. There is a hotel attached to the casino, but I know nothing about it…we could never stay there or even visit as our student was an athlete.

I think I’ve stayed in every hotel by the airport and Target, all are very nice. I’ve got great deals on Priceline. I’ve stayed at the Comfort Inn and the Best Western in Bethlehem. They were fine, not my first choice but they were fine. Never stayed at the Hotel Bethlehem, not in my price range.

The area where Hotel Bethlehem and Hyatt are located is very enjoyable for dining and shopping and seeing the historic side of the city, so that’s why we prefer it. I used to recommend the Hyatt, but when they raised their rates 25 % when the students had to vacate campus during Hurricane Sandy, I stopped recommending them. Also, they are more expensive than Hotel Bethlehem and offer no Lehigh discount. HB offer 15% as it is managed by a Lehigh alum. Have never stayed at the Comfort Inn near campus, seems like its always full. The Airport Rd hotels are nice, just on the highway and no where to walk around and take int he city. I have gotten some nice travelocity secret hotel deals there though, so if price is your main concern, I would go that route.

Hotel Bethlehem is definitely very nice, but it also looks pretty expensive. Airport Road is filled with plenty of decent places to stay. The main attraction should be Lehigh’s campus, not your hotel room.

And I remember hearing a lot of info about price gouging after Sandy. I know in New Jersey, it was illegal to raise prices by more than 10% when a state of emergency is declared - not sure about here in Pennsylvania.

But seriously, price gouging people who are desperate for hot showers and electricity - definitely not okay. Shame on the Hyatt for doing that.

Good idea! It’s inhumane that a hotel (or gas station, grocery store, etc.) would price gauge like that. I looked it up for you and found this:
“Pennsylvania law prohibits price increases of more than 20 percent during declared states of emergency. The limits remain in play for 30 days after the emergency declaration.” And that depending on the situation, they could charge up to tens of thousands PER offense.
