VixCamps

Not a camp I have ever seen discussed here, maybe not mainstream, there is the Victor Wooten series of bass/music camps. In consideration of the fact that nature camp may not fuel every musicians fire, and considering that there is no audition requirement, and so forth, has anyone considered going there or actually been there?

I am looking at options for S’s upcoming year spring break or summer break, and this camp is one that has a few dates to choose from, which makes it a possible additional camp rather than a camp that competes with other prime candidate camps. Another note, we have been hearing the idea that for bassists in particular, listening to many genres of music and having a broad study of music can be helpful - does that contrast with any ideas that exclusive focus on the bass and a particular genre is required for true excellence?

Might the vixcamps be an important perspective, a good chance to network, a welcome breath of fresh air, an odd interruption of serious pursuits, other?

Thanks.

My son spent a week at Wooten Woods this past spring and absolutely loved it. They do an exclusive camp for the jazz program at his school; this is the second time they’ve gone. The bassist from his combo has also gone privately as well, and raved about his experience. (He’s going to U of Mich for music in the fall.)

It’s a very hands-on camp and they really engage the kids. There’s a whole nature side to Wooten Woods that complements the music. For my son’s group, they brought in professional musicians playing various instruments and my son made some helpful connections. Victor Wooten is an amazingly versatile musician with a strong philosophy rooted in nature – read his book.
