Vocal Performace

I am about to start my senior and am trying to find a liberal arts college with a strong classical vocal Performace degree. I'd really like the performance degree and not general music if possible. The voice teacher is obviously more important than the reputation of the school. I looked a good amount during my junior year at colleges but have come back frustrated. Any suggestions you have would be great! It's hard to find anything concrete on classical voice + christian colleges on the Internet. I would also prefer not to go to school in the Midwest BUT if the best school for me is here I will go. Thanks!

Wheaton (outside of Chicago, Illinios) has a Conservatory. If I remember correctly, they said that they have about 500 students.

Thank you! Funny you mention Wheaton since I am currently filling out their application. This is my favourite of all the colleges I’ve looked at. Financially it’ll be hard to swing though.

Take a look at some of the Lutheran schools in Minnesota–St. Olaf in Northfield & Concordia College in Moorhead in particular. Midwestern, yes, but both have great vocal teachers & performance opportunities. For St. Olaf, you get the opportunity to hear/see at work world-class ensembles such as the Dale Warland Singers & Cantus, both based in the Cities. At Concordia, many of the vocal performance majors are also part of the Fargo-Moorhead Opera, and through that opportunity get to network with professional singers from across the country.

Hi! My daughter just started at Oklahoma City University (yeah, Oklahoma…i know!). They have a Vocal Performance degree and put on 3 operas a year. Typically their operas win awards at competition. It is a Methodist school. My daughter is excited about being there - she just had to get past the fact that it is in Oklahoma. Another place you could look at is Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi. All the best to you!

Thank you! I am visiting Belhaven in October actually. Glad to hear you recommend it! & I will look up the other one.

Houghton College in New York has a great reputation.
