Does anyone have any information on this program? I auditioned for MT at Chicago Unifieds and was recommended to go back to campus and audition for vocal performance. I have to admit that I don’t know much about it because I never really looked much into the voice program, as I was always focused on MT. I’m wondering if they are allowed to audition for the musicals/plays and also if there is room to take acting/dance classes. If anyone has any info, that would be great! :-)

Thanks!

Becca, I suggest you go to this link to review the VP program at Otterbein: http://www.otterbein.edu/music/BM_2008-2009.pdf

As you can see, the VP program is jam-packed, and while I think very highly of the program (full disclosure: my daughter attends Otterbein but has switched from music to an individualized BA in Global Music and Cultural Relations), I think you need to be aware of the intensity of the program. Acting/dancing classes may be problematic, since many of them are only open to theatre/dance students. If you look at this link: Otterbein College 2007-2009 Catalog Course Descriptions - Theatre , you'll see more about which classes are limited to majors.

Yes, non-MT/Acting students may audition for musicals and plays, and while I haven't made a study of it, there have been music majors cast, but it seems more occasional than not. Many VP students DON'T audition, in part because the required opera theatre course can conflict with theatre rehearsals. And of course, auditioning for the opera (performed during winter quarter) is expected.

I strongly suggest you e-mail either Dr. Johnson (chair of the music department) or Dr. Eckenroth (director of vocal activities) with some of your questions. They are both extremely accessible, and as with so many of the folks at Otterbein, I have no doubt they'd be willing to answer your questions without you having to worry about whether you're being "politically correct" in your questions. There's a great deal of cooperation, rather than competition, between the departments, so I doubt you'd be stepping on any toes. Contact information for Dr. J or Dr. E can be found here: Otterbein College Department of Music - How to Contact Us

If you do decide to audition at Otterbein and want to meet with a current student, let me know through a PM, and I can see if my daughter is available to meet with you when you're on campus. She's done this for many CC students, and if her schedule allows, she's more than willing to do it.
